Wait a minute. A potato shortage? In Idaho? Here’s why.

Idaho has a potato shortage. If you haven't heard about it already or noticed fewer and fewer potatoes in your grocery store's produce section, you will soon.

So, what's the problem? The weather. Not this year’s weather, mind you. It’s the weather from over a year ago that’s to blame.

“I'm not sure if you remember last June, but we had some just unbelievably hot temperatures here in Idaho. It did a number on our potato crop,” said Jamey Higham, president and CEO of the Idaho Potato Commission. “And so, our yields were significantly down last year.”

Now, keep that in mind when you learn that a previous year's potato crop cycle is supposed to last through the following August. And before the 2022 harvest comes into the pipeline (it’s just now beginning), consumers are facing the shortage from last year's crop.

6 bucks a gallon diesel is having an impact too.
I’ve heard it’s just not economical to ship some crops so they aren’t even bothering to harvest them.

Hot Potatoes!!!

Idaho, like Eastern Washington, is mostly desert in the lowlands. Always hot.

When I was but a wee lad growing up in So Cal, there were ads on TV saying, “How do you spell potato”? And the answer would come back as”I-D-A-H-O”. Alas that campaign ended abruptly when Moms got up in arms because their little ones would proclaim loudly, “Hey, mom, I know how to spell potato”.

Could have been a Trump campaign line.

“Elect sleepy Joe Biden, and in two years there will be a potato shortage in Idaho “

It takes ONE potato cut into pieces (with an ‘eye’ on each piece) to plant an acre.

Just kidding! Not an ACRE, but ONE seed potato goes a long way to make a LOT of potato plants.

It’s almost $8 for a 5lbs bag of red potatoes here when before it was around $3.50. That’s a huge increase. Yeah, we’ve noticed it.
