The second time the change machine was full.

Went to the local change(Coinstar) machine yesterday, and the machine, had on its screen a message, that it could not take anymore coins, because it was full.

Well today, went to the local superstore, and the coin machine had the same message.

Your interest in coin counting machines only makes sense if you are running a bidness with many, many ca$h transactions.

Are you?

You need to answer the objective questions.

It’s retarded to pay >10% to have people count your money.

If you are way rich, you can send your peeps to the machines [though I’m sure your Bank would be more than happy to do it for you gratis as you leave all sorts of money with them to also handle].

Otherwise you are way lazy....

I’ve seen more people using them at the supermarket, and it is a sign of hard times. During the 2007-2008 “he-cession”, I also received more wheat pennies and bicentennial quarters than I’d seen in decades - people were desperate.

OK, WHAT is the point?

I think this is one of those Rorschach Test posts. You see in it what you want to see in it.

My Friend’s son services those machines and he told me he would never trust one of them to count his money. He said they often undercount due to jams and foriegn objects—some pretty disgusting. He also told us that he typically finds hundreds of coins in the bottom of the machines which dropped out of the handler which likely were not counted. Manual coin sorters are very inexpensive, even automatic ones go for as low as $175.

What's the message?

The owner of the changer hasn't emptied it yet.....Maybe he's on vacation.

Being a bachelor, I accumulate 3 change piles that become large within a month... The biggest is the left side of the bathroom counter. On the side of the kitchen table, and the small table near front door. By 2 months, those 3 piles are totalled to approx $100 to $120 dollars. Paying $10 is well worth the time it would take to roll it all...

At least one person noted the point—people feeling short are scrounging their coins.

Just the beginning. Thanks, Brandon.

It’s possible that Coinstar is having trouble getting drivers to service machine(s).

When TD Bank had the coin counter machines in the lobby and didn’t charge anything for the convenience, that was great.

People hoarded change during the lockdowns. Now those jars are being emptied.

Is it an economic indicator? Maybe. But it’s more likely a cyclical thing combined with the guy who empties the machine being on vacation.

Unfortunately they didn’t keep them calibrated. Cost them a bunch in a lawsuit.

The scrap yards are busy even though scrap prices are low. Plenty of stuff for sale on fb marketplace and craigslist but no one’s buying.

My bank has a sign up saying they may not be able to fill coin orders due to coin shortage. Just this week.

I paid cash to the little store across the street and they expressed appreciation saying they were having a hard time getting change.

Never in my lifetime until covid lockdown did I see this signage or hear these comments. It’s ridiculous.

So if all these machines are full, why is there a national coin shortage?

Because all the coins are locked up in those machines.
