The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.
If you have specific question about a plant/problem you are having, please remember to state the Growing Zone where you are located.
This thread is a non-political respite. No matter what, you won’t be flamed, and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.
It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table Recipes, Preserving, Good Living - there is no telling where it will go - and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us! Send a Private Message to Diana in Wisconsin if you'd like to be added to our New & Improved Ping List.
NOTE: This is a once a week Ping List. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Gardeners are welcomed any time!
Watch for future seed sales from:

Jung’s usually has seed sales later in the season, but you can usually pick up good deals each week on surplus this-n-that, depending upon what you’re looking for.
That would work like a dream! When my boys were young, we’d use stacked tires to make our towers. Farm livin’! Always had old tires around for some reason.
I don’t think direction matters all that much - we got potatoes no matter where we put the stacks. Tipping them over and ‘bobbing for taters’ was a lot of fun! :)
The Heifers are in the pasture, now. They’re so pretty and very gentle. I go down the hill to tell them ‘Good Morning’ when I let the first rotation of dogs out to the exercise yard in the mornings...which I need to do right now!
The house is from 1900. It was originally your basic 4-square Colonial, but had the kitchen added on one end and a family room added on to the other at different times.
Beau bought it in 1983. It had been standing empty for 5 years, prior. After he moved the raccoons and rats out, he started rehabbing it. He did a beautiful job and we’ve had a number of visitors through the years who also used to live here and are just thrilled that someone is loving, ‘The Old Farm’ again.
We started calling it, ‘(Abandon All) Hope’ Farm as a joke, but the name has stuck. :)
We’ve been having those same kinds of mornings, but I am just bundling up. I’m not turning the heat back on unless it goes below 32 - hoping we’re past that by now!
Better than my home on "Acre o' clay!"
(More like 3/4 acre; on a hilltop, but all the neighbor's trees mess up the dramatic views!)
It has been cold around here lately 40s at night, 60-70 in the day. I have some bags with sweet potatoes and put gardening fabric on them last night. Need to go look at them. Looks like several days of rain coming up, fine for the Lettuce and Chinese Cabbage and Peas I guess.
Computer slide.
My wife’s 12 year old Dell Inspirion died last night. ( F2 at startup, ran the multi hour Diagnostic; clock, display, logic, arithmatic fine; Disc 0F00; 394. “Cant read, replace disc” concluded the Diagnostic: Also 0F00:065D error. Some advice to use Norton or another program to repair, but its pretty old and takes forever to start up. Want to get away from the mechanical disc drive and move to SSD. (SSD Not an option on the old computer.)
I have a Dell laptop loaded with Linux that was very kindly provided to me by someone that I really need to start using! (If you read this Thank you O & G!!) Bought a mouse and separate keyboard because I hate working with laptops (His suggestion, again thanks!) It also has a Windows partition. I need to get it connected to the internet and exploring what I can do with it. has been mostly an issue of time. Oh well. Computer Slide over. I need to start doing things outside.
There are seeds like tomatoes and peppers that will store up to 5 years;
Are there any seeds that people should avoid buying in seller's year end sales? Any that they should stock up on?
So, you can’t see the forest for the trees? *SMIRK*
Rule of Thumb is, the smaller the seed, the longer the viability. Also seeds with a hard shell last longer. For example, The Coconut. I read somewhere that they germinated one that was estimated to be 200 years old!
So, stockpile coconuts, LOL!
Also, storage is of utmost importance. I’ll ping the Seed Saving Expert to see if she wants to post a short primer. ;)
(You keep them to provide a place for the Deer to stay until hunting season!)
I was able to get the last of my tomato plants in the ground earlier in the week. In hopes of saving a bit of floor space, I'm going to espalier the romas on a cattle panel rather than caging them in a two-panel teepee as I've done in the past. The slicer varieties are caged as always. I need to find some wheat straw to mulch all of them. I skipped that last year and regretted doing so. Saves a lot of time weeding when you make it so the weeds can't sprout.
I've used up all of the drip tape that I bought a few years ago. I like the stuff, but it's somewhat of a nuisance to install just to be ripped out and tossed at the end of the growing season, so I'm switching over to soaker hose this time. Those are a lot less work to put down, and they ought to last for a good long time as long as I don't leave them out over winter.
The mediterranean herbs seem to be very happy with the conditions in the greenhouse. Several varieties of basil are ready for harvest, the oregano is ready to be stuck in the dirt in one of Mrs. Augie's flower beds, as is the fennel. The brandywine tomato that I thought had croaked snapped out of its funk and has taken off nicely, so I need to figure out a place to put him soon.
Love the tomato cages!
Looking good! Nice tomato growing ‘system’ you have, there!
Looks good! I picked some lettuces for a salad with supper, tonight.
‘Weber’ Beef Tips are in the crock pot as I type.
Mom! Pollard has all the Shishito Peppers, LOL!
I saw that! Checked just for fun today at the store. Nothing plus the same veggie plants that went on sale for 3 for 12.00 last week. Today 2 for 12.00!
Two months old and the biggest is 6 inches tall. I'm thinking I should have potted up and got them out of the seed starting mix into something a little more potent.
“Today 2 for 12.00!”
Ridiculous! It costs THAT much more to truck them in? Yeah, well, maybe. Ugh!
Remember how we thought LAST year was going to suck and we needed to redouble our gardening efforts?
Well, I nearly KILLED myself last year with all the canning I did, and while I cut back on tomato plants this year (20 or so versus the 36 I did last year) I’m thinking I might need to do it all over again! Double Ugh!
