In a small study of healthy adults aged 55 and older, 5 mg of melatonin increased total sleep time compared to a placebo.
Researchers conducted the study in 24 healthy, older adults to evaluate whether a high-dose or a low-dose melatonin supplement could improve sleep. The team found that the higher dose had a significant impact, increasing total sleep time compared to placebo by more than 15 minutes for nighttime sleep and by half an hour for daytime sleep.
The body naturally produces melatonin, which helps regulate a person's sleep-wake cycle with night and day. Melatonin levels peak at night. But among older people, levels of the hormone are often lower. Exogenous melatonin is sold over the counter and can be taken before bedtime as a dietary supplement, usually in a pill.
During the monthlong study period, participants lived in individual study rooms with no windows, clocks, or other indications of time of day. Participants followed a forced desynchrony protocol—instead of experiencing 24-hour cycles of days and nights, they were on schedules of 20-hour cycles to disentangle the effects of rest-activity from the circadian clock. Participants were randomly assigned to receive two weeks of a placebo pill and two weeks of either a low (0.3 mg) or high (5 mg) dose of melatonin 30 minutes before bedtime. Researchers used polysomnography to record brain waves, eye movement, muscle tone, and other key sleep metrics.
The team found that the low dose of melatonin did not lead to a statistically significant change in overall sleep time and that the changes that were seen were when sleep was scheduled during the biological day. Participants taking the 5 mg dose had a significant increase in total sleep time and sleep efficiency regardless of whether sleep was scheduled during the day or night.

I was taking it QD for more than a year.
I SWEAR I started feeling much MORE anxiety. On a indications/effects I read somewhere, it stated that one of the side effects is "anxiety". I stopped it immediately.
Anxiety GONE almost over night. Hmmm.
bump
As someone who has had problems with sleeping for a very long time; I can assure you that not sleeping (my top non-sleeping was 3 days) can also give you hallucinations (why is there a hand coming out of my wall?).

Watch “Melatonin - Better than expected” on YouTube

Different people react differently. I tried the 5 mg. tablets. It did nothing for me. It didn’t help me sleep and gave me no nightmares, no dizziness, nothing that I noticed.
Every person with whom I shared the above video and did four simple things slept much better the very first night.
*Avoid the teeeveee/phone and computer screen one hour before bed.
*Turn off all the lights
*Take a small dose of melatonin before bed
*resist looking at the alarm clock and don’t turn on a light for bathroom visits in the middle of the night, if you must go.
It’s quite amazing how many sleep with a teevee on all night in the bedroom and complain they don’t sleep well!
>>If taking melatonin, consider a time-release form, and check with your doctor.<<
Melatonin can have interactions with your other meds.

I’ve taken it at bedtime, and it helps me get a full night’s sleep.
It raised my blood pressure and made following mornings very groggy for too many hours.
“I’m at 10 mg melatonin and 500mg magnesium at night. Fall sleep quickly and have decent rest until 2-3-4. Wake up, check free republic and then call back asleep.”
We must be twins! I could have written that with no changes!
That’s a good talk, thanks for posting.

“It raised my blood pressure”
What you say HAS been reported. But more common is a reduction:
“In a study conducted by Kozirog et al.25, it was demonstrated that patients with metabolic syndrome showed a reduction by a mean of 12.3 mmHg in systolic and 6.5 mmHg in diastolic BP when treated with 5 mg of melatonin 2 h before bedtime.”
Metabolic syndrome is common these days.
“..a little exercise and sunshine does wonders.”
Sunshine helps you sleep?
Less is often more with Melatonin supplementation.
More fundamentally, human beings - especially in “civilized” nations - spend most of their time indoors, under artificial lighting, and fully clothed.
The integument (skin) is the largest organ of the body. It produces active Vitamin [actually hormone) D in response to full spectrum sunlight.
The Pineal Gland produces Melatonin in response to full-spectrum light passing through the retina of the eye.
Both hormones tend to be deficient because we deny our bodies the natural nutrient (insolation: incoming solar radiation) that the body needs.
Sunbathing is very beneficial. Closing the beaches was just another way to harm human health in the Age of Plandemic.
Sunshine helps you sleep?
See 33.
I’m also allergic to scopolamine (apparently not many are) and nuts.
I’d suggest trying a Super B Complex vitamin supplement before bed as an alternative to melatonin. For me, it leads to a good night’s sleep without any side effects.
Lol!!!!! Now I know whom to ping in the middle of the night!!!!

but one is “statistically significant”. the other just significant.
Worthless study. Who writes this stuff?
I have been taking 5 mg. nightly for years now. Works great. If I forget to take it I don’t sleep very well.
Same here: Without discussion, my surgeon crossed melatonin off my list of supplements upon the occasion of my one stent.
