Pieces of ‘fireball’ meteor that exploded over Mississippi are being found, NASA says

Meteorites are not ‘flaming rocks of doom,' NASA says

The “bright fireball” was traveling at 35,000 mph when it exploded at 8:03 a.m. with the “energy equivalent of 3 tons of TNT,” according to NASA Meteor Watch, the agency's project that tracks fireball activity.

“Existing law states that any meteorites belong to the owner of the property on which they fell; out of respect for the privacy of those in the area, we will not disclose the locations of these finds,”

And finding anything of value is likely harder than you think.

“The pieces from this object were way too small to leave a crater. Unlike what you see in the movies, meteorites are not ‘flaming rocks of doom’ that blast holes in the ground. In fact, you can pick one up right after it hits ground. So no smoking rocks in small craters.”

It’s a nice morning here, and I’m spending it trying to get the boys to take ownership of their various gym shorts, so they’ll stop fighting about them. Oh, what fun!

Yes, COVID, private mourning and learning to cope delayed things.

Yes, I lost two people very close to me in 2020 and we were unable to have proper funerals for them or even be with them to say “goodbye.” One did have a small funeral, but COVID rules dictated that only ten people could show up in person and he had a huge family. They did live-stream the funeral and graveside service, so that was something.

I’m glad it turned out to be a celebration of his life. That can be quite a healing event, or at least very comforting.

Again, my sincere condolences.

Thanks, but no, it’s still painful. It’s discombobulating!

Aw, that sucks! I hope you get feeling better very quickly.

Are you supposed to drive to Memphis or is someone else driving? How long of a haul is it?

I suppose offering to label them on the outside with Doofus 1, Doofus 2, etc. wouldn’t help?

She’s about a 10-hour drive away. Of course, we could fly. Then it’s only 12 hours with a long layover.

In case anyone is interested, The Other Folks are in London, and will be there for the next four days before heading home.

They hated Paris, a place I’ve never wanted to go, and don’t think I would if I had an “all-expenses-paid” trip.

There were no less than 150 photos of the VW factory and museum at Wolfsburg, and all in all, I’d say it was a very good part of their trip.

I think they’ll be home sometime Saturday. But I’m not going to worry about it. I may or may not be in Memphis on that day, so it will be what it is.

Thanks!

No someone else will be driving, and it’s about a two-hour trip on I-40, which I learned to hate on my way out here from Southern Utah/Nevada.

I wouldn’t drive that stretch even if I had my own wheels.

Mom was up in the middle of the night demanding to know where everyone went. ‘They’ were apparently in every room and they all just up and left.

I blame space aliens.

She’s been in there arguing with someone for several hours. When finally rousted at 8 she demanded to know whether they should go on hangers or on a line to dry.

Should they be washed, I don’t want them to lose their shape, she carried on for several minutes after being theoretically awake. I suggested dry clean only or Woolite to keep them from shrinking.

She wanted me to call them (’them’ apparently being the phantoms she’d been arguing with) and ask them.

Last night she went to bed 5 minutes before dinner, insisting she wasn’t hungry. Which she apparently she really wasn’t as she didn’t raid the pantry for snackaroos, as is her usual on the way to bed pattern.

All the shouting and grumbling coming from her room alarmed the dog. He really doesn’t like loud voices. We think he ended up abandoned and sleeping under the stars as a result of a bitter divorce. Probably never know...

Good tagline.

Mom is theoretically up. Wants to know if the guests have eaten.

they left mom.

no they’re in my room.

they went home.

all their clothes are here.

those are your clothes.

were’s nully?

I’m here, mom, I’M nully.

did they take the dog?

you just let him out.

maybe they’re out getting us breakfast.

and on and on *sigh*

Now she’s doing dishes and has dismantled the stove to clean it.

I’ve hidden the cast irony frying pan to keep it out of the dishwasher.

How interesting. And how very stressful. Hang in there! <3

Yes, we don’t want the cast iron to go into the dishwasher!

Poor Tyson. He must be very confused by all this. I’m sure he knows she’s ill, which is probably even more confusing for him. If she smells ill, he’s probably confused by her actions and the sounds she makes.

How can I help, Nully?

I seem to be equally spread between the fours and the fives, with 24 each, after today’s effort. I coulda had it in four if I had gone with instinct instead of caution.

Ratboy wandered in for coffee, said ‘You can’t stop her?’

‘Didn’t try. No point.’

He mumbled something like probably couldn’t if you tried. Got his coffee and left.

Museums are probably a better choice than the Tower. It looked like a madhouse and they were pressed for time.

I just want to go back to Germany! Although I might be talked into a visit to España. 😜
