Coastal Panel Staff Advises Against Huntington Beach Desalination Plant (California)
Times of San Diego via MSN ^ | 4/26/22

A proposed California desalination plant that would produce 50 million gallons of drinking water per day failed a crucial regulatory hurdle on Monday, possibly dooming a project that had been promoted as a partial solution for sustained drought.

The staff of the California Coastal Commission recommended denying approval of the Huntington Beach plant proposed by Poseidon Water, controlled by the infrastructure arm of Canada’s Brookfield Asset Management.

The commission’s staff said the project was more susceptible to sea-level rise than was understood when it was first proposed more than two decades ago. The plant is expected to produce 50 million gallons of drinking water per day, enough for 16% of the homes in the Orange County Water District, where 2.5 million people live.

The Coastal Commission, which is scheduled to consider the matter on May 12, could defy the staff recommendation and vote to approve the project.

The 12-member commission is made up of six local elected officials and six members of the public who are appointed by the governor, a senate committee, and the assembly speaker.

“When Poseidon first proposed its facility at this location nearly 25 years ago, sea level rise projections were much lower and adaptation planning was in its infancy,” the staff report said. “Since that time, our understanding of the severity and consequences of climate change and sea level rise have grown exponentially.”

We have a desalination plant here in Carlsbad, built and operated by the same company.

And here it is:

50 million gallons per day.

My first thought .... and it would remain above the water line for 50-100 years without any danger.

The ultimate reason for the denial is to continue the multifaceted kill off. No water, no food, no health, bailing out the Nazis, etc.

California has plenty of water for agriculture and more. The only reason that de-sal was even considered was due to the state government virtually shutting down the State Water Project built in the 70s due to an obscure “Delta Smelt” fish. This raised the cost of water so much that costly de-sal plants began to approach economic viability. If not for this artificial shortage, Cali would be doing far better. Too bad since we’ll be desperately needing that agriculture very soon......

Interesting info about the waste water recycling system in Vegas. Are they just recycling the gray water? To hit 99%, it would have to be ALL the water. If they dump the processed water back into Lake Mead, they aren’t getting as much dilution as they used to get when the lake was full.

I was working in the power plant at a mine near Rock Springs, Wyoming many decades ago. I was dying of thirst in the construction trailer and drank from the wash basin tap. BIG mistake. After I drank, I saw the hand printed “Not potable” sign. Less than 30 minutes later I was doubled up in my car with the worst cramps I’ve ever had. It passed and I didn’t think much of it until six weeks later in a paper mill in Arizona when it came back with a vengeance, only this time with explosive diarrhea. I had to drive a couple hours to get over to Flagstaff to get a decent medical facility.

Some years later, I got giardia on a backpacking trip in the Sierras, but it was nothing like those earlier episodes.

I developed a new respect for water systems and always carefully search out signs and heed them.

Exactly. It would remain well above the ocean water line decades longer than the life of the plant. They could tear it down after 50 years and build a new one a little farther inland (IF the water actually rises).

Las Vegas uses a tertiary process on the tail end of their standard sewerage system. This effluent is then used in the purple pipe network most however flows down the Las Vegas Wash directly into Lake Mead up stream from intakes 1,2&3 Lake Mead still has billions of gallons and wind plus wave actions rapidly mix the effluent with lake water. Even then the tertiary treated water could be used directly at the intake of the municipal water treatment plant for potable water in a toilet to tank direct program but the yuck factor is too much for most Americans. Singapore does T to T direct for more than half it’s supply a couple of West Texas cities also do T2T direct the first in the USA. San Antonio does recycle by injection into the Edwards aquifer updip from the potable wells. DFW does similar to Lake Mead effluent from half of the regions sewage plants flows back to the main water source lake Lavon via a constructed wetlands on the Trinity River the other half flows direct from the outfalls on the shore of Lake Lavon where three large sewage treatment plants for three North Texas cities are located. People don’t know or like to think about it but most cities use some form of indirect recycle.effluent that does leave the DFW system flows down the Trinity River system directly to Lake Huntsville Houston’s primary water supply lake so Houston is getting DFW pass through. Austin passes its water to everyone else down stream on the Colorado River in Texas they recycle back to Lake Austin and Travis as well both are water supply lakes.

Wouldn't drawing 50 million gals of sea water per day do something to combat 'sea level rise'? They're saying the plant can provide 50 mil gals of drinking water per day so they are probably drawing more. Not only should they go ahead and build this one, they should start 5-6 more.

25 years for this? WTH is wrong with these people?

People like to beat the dead horse of illegals this and illegals that in this case it’s a textbook straw man argument as the numbers clearly show but hey don’t let facts get in the way of a good ole fashioned political hissy fit

Bull shit. You're trying to sugar coat the issue. I find that quite interesting.

Millions of illegals and American hating foreign nationals in CA have literally choked off the hospitals, schools, jails and social services that were once met for legitimate citizens. No?

And even if millions of illegals use such little water as you claim, do ya think the Communist/leftist who've been encouraging and aiding and abetting millions to enter CA have your best interest in mind?

Do ya think hiring thousands of illegals and American hating foreign nationals over the past 30 years into positions of authority/power, support common senses policies regarding resources in CA?

Ya know they're even pushing laws now which will allow for illegals to be cops in CA?

Hissy fit? You're FOS.

“The term “exponentially” is a giveaway that the staff is comprised of a bunch of poorly educated lefty kids.”

Sure would be nice if that were true. Unfortunately they are FAR SMARTER than our side - otherwise they wouldn’t keep beating us.

Obviously you are incapable of reading comprehension. I posted the official water use stats for California compiled yearly. Then even granting half the population of California is illegals which they are not would mean that usage is only 2.5% of the total. That’s facts the data us above try to not be a knuckle dragger mouth breather and read some. Illegals are a problem they are not the reason California is running low on water irresponsible agriculture again that’s just cold hard facts. It doesn’t help the people actually trying to fix the issue to beat a straw man but hey keep demonstrating why most people think conservatives are all mouth breathers when given the exact data and facts needed to frame the issue. In this case water usage which is 40% agricultural vs 5% urban retail use even if every person left California that only saves 5% so tell the class how that helps given the volumes involved. God you rednecks are so dumb. This is why anyone without a master’s or PhD in that discipline shouldn’t be allowed to make policy decisions in this case hydrology or hydrogeology.

“they are FAR SMARTER than our side - otherwise they wouldn’t keep beating us.”

The left has the clever smarts of the sociopath—but logistics is totally beyond their pay grade.

That is why every place they rule turns into a third world &^%$pile.

You say upwards of 10+ million illegals and foreign nationals in CA use very little water? I'm not really buying that.

It really don't mean zip anyway since millions of illegals and American hating foreign nationals in CA have literally choked off the hospitals, schools, jails, prisons and all social services that were once met for legitimate citizens. Or would you describe concerns over this epic open border dumpster fire in CA as a, "Hissy fit" as well?

12 people - 6 elected officials (probably not an engineer among them) and 6 citizens (again, probably the same).

Long coastline. Put it somewhere else.

Or we could keep growing food to feed ourselves.

The biggest problem is not agriculture but that illegal aliens are not stamped "return to sender" loaded into a catapult and sent back across the border.

I know it is not what you, in the depths of your desire to turn the US in the a third world hell hole that can not feed it's self want, but it is the answer.
