Companion planting is the practice of growing different plants together for mutual benefit.1 The research on the benefits of companion planting focuses on vegetable gardens, but ornamentals like roses can also benefit from companion planting to help prevent disease and insect infestation.
Unlike other areas of gardening, companion planting is not always based on hard scientific facts but on observations, the type of garden lore found in farmer’s almanacs. There is always an element of trial and error to see what works for you. However, understanding your garden as a system of biodiversity where plants are all connected and interdependent on each other helps you make better plant choices.

Thank you - info I needed & the chart makes it so easy! I will share with my nieces, both of whom will have big gardens this year.
Temperatures the next couple of nights are going to be below freezing so I am using this to not feel so guilty about being unable to do any gardening right now. I keep reminding myself that it is still March and usually the earliest we can plant around here is mid April and even then, there is still the danger of cold freezing nights when plants have to be covered up with a tarp or a 5 gallon bucket.
This is not meant as any sort of a lecture, but a gentle reminder (from someone who got a not-so-gentle reminder 3 weeks ago) to count your blessings every day that you are able to get around and do things like Garden, even if health is not perfect otherwise and perhaps the “getting around” part is somewhat limited. You never know from day to day what the future will bring, so enjoy & appreciate each ‘can do’ day. I’m on the mend and cannot wait to be able to get in the garden again, but I definitely have had a lot of ‘down’ time to “think about things” and count the blessings I do have. One of those blessings is definitely the Saturday Morning Garden thread! :-)

I see these in the local hills when I walk my dogs and now they're available in local nurseries in various colors.
I am happy to report that my orchids are blooming again after a few years of waiting. I moved them to a different area of my yard, hopefully the rest will bloom next year (I inherited these).
Also, the roses are coming in nicely.

Seems like basil and rosemary kept the tomato hornworms away from the plants they were planted near.
I’m planning on starting my tomatoes in the next couple days.
Monday is supposed to be nasty cold, high in the 20’s and low at night in the teens for a couple nights.
I do have some stuff to cover.
Thanks, especially beautiful since here in west Michigan we woke up to a covering of snow. Daffodils halfway up not blooming yet.
Daffodils have bloomed, iris are up and tulips are appearing to break out of the dirt. Bare root roses I put in a few weeks back are well budded out, established roses are doing great and frost resistant annuals are blooming like crazy. Son with has wife and daughter are coming in this afternoon for their first visit here to my Tidewater garden spot and I think I will put them to work as soon as the frost is past on Tuesday morning.

I have pepper seedlings up and tomatoes are right behind, indoors. My greenhouse growing isn't doing much other than a few lettuces coming up and some kale. I probably jumped the gun a little on that, but I have such a small window to use it in spring before it becomes an OVEN; I got started too soon! Fall is the real growing time extender in there for me in Zone 5b.
I'll have pictures later in the week, but the forced bulbs I planted in pots in the greenhouse are starting to emerge. Tulips and Daffs, and I potted up Dahlias for later planting, but am keeping them under plastic for a while, yet.
The three Plott Hounds we are currently raising are doing well. Olive, Babe & Gator. Olive appears to be the smartest, Babe is the most feisty and Gator is a big old doofus, but completely adorable. They just turned 6 months and will go to their first 'Bear Training Camp' with Beau in June & July, when he'll decide who he's going to keep and train for bear hunting and who goes back to our Amanda as a pet.
Ohhhhhh..... you meant that kind of companion planting.
Beautiful! Can’t wait until I can show off my roses to you, later this season. No bunny ‘pruning’ over the winter, so I’m already ahead of the game! :)
Does the ‘Sticky Monkey Flower’ come in a ‘Cheeky Monkey’ version? LOL! Always loved that British phrase for, ‘smart aleck.’
