What the hell is wring with "popcorn" ceilings?
HGTV and all the fixer upper channels | 3/25/22 | dallasbiff

I've been watching the fixer upper shows, and I don't get the hatred of "popcorn ceilings".

When you are a kid, you can look at the popcorn ceiling over your bed and see shapes like when you look at clouds.

“In 20 years, vinyl plank flooring will be laughed at even more than we laugh at popcorn ceilings.”

I’ve seen instances where people have used vinyl plank flooring AS their ceiling.

Have we gone full circle yet?

I got married in 1970. The wedding gifts were hilarious, including several bun warmers and fondue sets in avocado and harvest gold.

The popcorn falls off. Nearly impossible to clean. They stain and a repair is an act of Congress! You need special rollers to paint, and more paint. They are a pain.

I always figured the reason for popcorn ceilings was so they didn’t have to hire a competent taper and plaster guy.

My entire house is popcorn ceiling, and the walls that inflict blood inducing injuries if you bump into them. We had a dog who used our walls to scratch his backside.

Popcorn reduces the echo in the room.

Asbestos wont hurt you if you leave it intact. Break it up into dust, and it will but just hanging there, like the asbestos siding on an old farm house I own, or in old ceiling tiles, they wont hurt you at all.

Or avocado kitchen appliances, water beds, lava llights and giant bean bag chairs! LOL

I don't care about the other stuff, but I had water beds for almost 40 years and loved them.

Nothing like getting into a bed with a 98.6 degree temp for restful sleeping {or anything more active}.

People that make fun of a well constructed water bed {with individual sections} have never had one.

I could no longer get replacement parts for my water bed by 2018 and have been sleeping on a very good mattress since.

Given my choice, I'd go back to a water bed, but there is no choice.

Yep. That was my experience, too. I didn’t even try to fix the popcorn. Ugh, I hated that ceiling from the moment I laid eyes on it. It had sparkles, too. The former owner who installed it did a beautiful job - if you like popcorn ceilings, that is. Many people commented on how nice it looked. But, they didn’t have to live with it.

My bad, there is a choice and I will investigate it.

Spray textured (popcorn) has minimal taped wall bore joints. The spray is almost the same as wall board mud. In truth you have no paint. Hides a lot of defects but won’t refinish suitably.

Tape and sanded like a wall will show every wavy ceiling joist however so knock down finish is the way to go.

If the ceilings/floors are concrete slabs (like mine), you need popcorn ceilings or else you wind up living in an echo chamber.

Most houses over 50 years old have some level of asbestos in them. Floor tile, ceiling tile, insulation, duct insulation, drywall, and joint compound are the usual culprits.

Popcorn ceilings drip butter and salt.
