I've been watching the fixer upper shows, and I don't get the hatred of "popcorn ceilings".

What’s wrong with orange shag carpeting?
My parents' lasted decades. When it finally wore out, she replaced it with a free one removed from the parlour from the rectory of the modern architecture church in town. (My sister finally bought the house, and went back to the wood underneath!)

Everyone adors Chip and Joanna, but I can’t stand the fact that every one of her rooms is so “white”.
They are EVIL! Thanks to them one-quarter of the houses we looked at had sliding barn doors in the bedrooms. THAT will get old more quickly than vinyl plank floors.
Also the relentless assault of GRAY EVERYWHERE proved to be a huge mistake when people were forced to be surrounded by it all of the time during the height of the CCP virus.
I see expensive new cars that sport the same colour as the primer coat of a Revell kit from the '60s . . . UGH!

What the hell is wring with "popcorn" ceilings? Most HGTV fans aren't aware of minor technical details such as roller nap and the need to match roller nap with the type surface being painted.
Otherwise, they would know that textured popcorn ceilings can be painted as easily as smooth walls and wouldn't waste time watching entire segments on resurfacing perfectly good popcorn ceiling.

At least they’re a ceiling. How do you clean the industrial look with all the exposed hvac ducts, pipes and wires running everywhere? Well, you know pretty quickly when the sewer pipes start leaking.

So, when you do make sheetrock (drywall) repairs on a formerly stipled surface, how do you blend in the new 1 ft x 1 ft area to get close to the rest of the wall?

Married in ‘71. We got at least three fondue sets. I think we used one of them once.

Had trouble with mine in the summer. The butter would get soft and the popcorn kept falling off.

Very, very hard to find something “not stainless “... and in 10 years, we will be back to white sheet metal that doesn’t show every finger and drip.

Smooth ceilings are a status symbol. Popcorn ceilings are cheaper because they were sprayed on, while the rich could afford to pay for the extra labor involved in achieving a smooth ceiling finish.

You are correct. It requires less finishing, spray it and go.

Water beds are great for sleeping, but for sex not so much.

If you had gotten all the stipple off and sanded the surface on the formerly stippled ceiling it should be smooth so that normal drywall repair should look okay.
My son’s condo had stippling on the ceilings and he spent a lot of time removing it but ended up with a smooth ceiling. The problem with hopper-sprayed stippling or the twist-brush or other brush stippling is that it is damned difficult to match with a repair. You have to be really good at it. Not a layman’s job, IMO.
