I pulled the trigger, yesterday. Been wanting to sign up and have been doing all the research. I just joined their very BASIC program; $3+ a week for 2 months and then three free or some such deal. Affordable. On-line. Self-directed. No mandatory meetings.
My Mom always used Weight Watchers when she wanted to shed some pounds, and I've spent 3/4 of my LIFE maintaining my weight to strict Army standards. Not FUN - but I also used to get a LOT more exercise than I do now, at age 62. Also, no longer working a job where I was on my feet all day, every day, has been an issue. (Retired in 2016.)
I LOVE to walk. I HATE to run. Even if something is chasing me, LOL!
We BOTH (Beau & I) need to shed some pounds. No one is going to be there to care for either of us as we dodder off into the Sunset, so staying HOME and HEALTHY is getting to be a necessity. I have slightly elevated blood pressure (take a mild diuretic for that), and Diabetes runs in my family, and I DO NOT want that! Losing weight will help with both.
Beau has PMR which is an inflammation of the joints; effects his shoulders and hips. Losing weight will also help with that.
Also, I want to be able to outrun any Zombies that show up! ;) (See my tag line.)
Yep. It's NOT Rocket Science. Less calories in, more calories burned. I KNOW what to do. I just need to DO IT! I cook completely from scratch; we eat whole foods, very little processed. If we go out to eat, it's once or twice a YEAR. We are NOT between-meal snackers, but we both NEED a little chocolate on a daily basis. :)
So, give me your best advice, tips, tricks, hints, motivators, etc. to start us off right! Thanks! :)
My .20:
Eat mostly “Paleo” style. (carbs from fruit, not bread/pasta)
Apply systems thinking vs goals.
Lift 3 days a week. (alternate upper body days and lower body days)
Walk whenever.
Do some yoga.
Meditate/pray daily.
Get plenty of sleep.
Oops, .02
Have you considered KETO?
You see that thing around here from the Daily Mail about walking? There were a lot of good tips on that thread about FREEPERS who also enjoy the many benefits of walking. I think it was 2 or 3 days ago...
There are better ways than donating to Oprah’s WW.
I’ve been a WW member for more than 20 years. I started back to meetings in mid-January (wish I’d done it before Christmas, sigh), and I like the new plan. One of the best things about it is the “anti-points” you get for eating non-starchy vegetables. I sometimes finish a day with more points than I started with.
My number one habit for success is to go to bed when I’m tired instead of sitting up watching TV and eating, like the remainder of my family.
That was easily 20-cents worth of advice! :)
As we have gotten older, we have changed. Metabolism is slower. Stay busy, keep out of the kitchen.
Don’t eat late. Once I have brushed my teeth, my intake is done for the day.
Re: chocolate. See if you can’t develop a taste for very-high-cocoa-content chocolate. Start with 72% and work your way up to 85% or more. It’s an acquired taste, but you’ll avoid the very high sugar content of crappy milk chocolate (pardon my French). Also, the “calories in, calories out” notion is terribly inaccurate. A filet mignon and a Snickers bar may give the same readings in a bomb calorimeter, but their effect on the body is completely different. Very low carb / keto works like magic for weight loss.
Well, with the current inflation...
:)
Agree, the system is the key, put a process in place and follow it, walk daily if possible. Yoga use YouTube if you cannot afford the classes, you can build up 15 min then 30 then 45 or so. Good luck, let us know when you lost the first 10.
I know KETO works well for some people. I’ve researched that a lot too. We like a more balanced diet than just meat, eggs, butter, cream, etc.
I grow a HUGE garden, so eating FRESH is important. We are growing on a steer for beef. I know beef is higher in calories, but controlling portion sizes can help with that.
I just want to eat ‘normal’ foods and lose some weight and get ON with my life. :)
Walking is the best exercise you can do and you can do it your entire life.
Thanks! Will look for that thread.
Keto is significantly easier and more effective.
IF you're unfortunately addicted to fats, like three or so people I've known, recognize it and deal with it as such.
Best of luck to all.
Yep. That was a consideration, too. I just wanted their basic information; I don’t have a Smart-Phone. I’m not going to be tied into it 24/7.
Hence, the reason I took the MINIMUM membership. I have three or four of the cook books that are still on the ‘Point System’ and this is very self-directed. Plenty of recipes can be found on-line, too. I love to cook, so THAT has been part of our problem, too. I can still cook - just change the recipes a bit here and there.
She’s not gonna push ME around! :)
Yes. WW is very expensive. Go on a KETO diet and become a label watcher instead. No breads, booze, milk, cereal, rice, or any other food that is high in carbs. Even fruit can be high in carbs.
I hired a dietician and lost 35 pounds over 3 months. It’s all in cutting the carbs. Walking any cycling are very good for low stress on joints.
What is the weight watchers diet considered?
Sugar and refined carbs are ENEMY NUMBER 1. Avoid those and most diets work. Also DO NOT underestimate the role poor sleep can play with weight gain.
