LOL! Note to self, German Shepherds make better companions than Weimaraners.

Also, it’s a good idea to be with your animal when it’s being examined or treated. Sometimes the vet can use your help, and it can give the animal more confidence, too.

I’ve got a Red Healer that’s bitten the
hose off of two vacuum cleaners and he’s
never been so confused as to try and hump
my leg.

They say that when they take him in another room he calms down and the vet can treat him.

Dude has a houseful of German working breeds. Not saying he’s in danger, but I can see a little old lady maybe being a victim of a pack response if she went down for some reason.

Probably too early for me to cast another vote for King.

"He has no idea how big he is."

I had a miniature Pinscher with the black and tan markings who was a bit bigger that a Chihuahua. We were at a dog park once and a Great Dane with the same black and tan markings came in at the far end of the park. He looked at me, then at her, then back at me and took off at full speed to make her acquaintance. Not a doubt in his little mind that he would win her affections.

Decades back, a relative (an uncle) joined a group of us after work for a cocktail. Our Labrador was there. My uncle had just retrieved a body from a nearby lake (he was the county coroner). Had not yet cleaned up, and must have smelled quite literally like a dead man walking, or a zombie so far as our Lab was concerned. He went apeshit, and from that point on, did NOT like my uncle..

Pugs have the best ballistic characteristics, followed closely by Chihuahuas. The trebuchet is the best launch platform.

“Never vacuum around a horny Weimaraner.”

Mr. Weimeraner thought he was performing rescue CPR.

My dog obedience instructor demonstrated that dogs are very ‘situational’. We were a “competition class” so the training was pretty thorough and intense. We had been doing a “Sits & Downs” exercise with our dogs for weeks, extending the duration and moving toward “out-of-sight” sits & downs. We all felt pretty good about out dogs and they seemed parade ground “rock solid.” Until-that is- the instructor had us set up our dogs on the other side of the room from the side we regularly used for the exercise. Most of the dogs couldn’t perform the exercise just because they had a different sight-picture.

“German Shepherds are not only fearless, but scary smart.”

Pretty much all the herding breeds are that way. Border Collies are such problem solvers they will take your house apart and re-assemble it when they get bored.

I suspect that particular Shepherd had some schutzhund training. But the Weimeraner made for great contrast!

I’ll see your 110lb GSD and raise you my 225 Cane Corso, Sherman, and 200lb Boreboel, Gunner.

Sherm, who I also the Germ, became he is all over you, is like an over grown cocker spaniel.

And The Gun is another big goofball.

But I pity the fool who decides to come in my backyard.

A dog’s sense of smell is so much greater and more refined than ours, I can see their reactions being much stronger, too.

And I wonder sometimes exactly what-all animals pick up with that, besides the obvious. There’s still a whole lot about animal cognition and awareness that we don’t understand.

Yes. And I think they can be intimidated when they’re off their own turf, even when Master is there.

I’ve had cats who would stand for treatment from the vet that they’d never take from us at home.

(But with cats, many times they’re already demoralized by the car ride to the vet in the first place.)

Because the cat knows that the vet has no sympathy for the wriggling and acting like they’re about to die when you cut their nails!! At least, my vet doesn’t. Should note that he’s treats the big cats at the local zoos. lol

Sometimes I think the cat’s sense of hearing is in 3 dimensions, possibly many more. How else can they hear a mouse in the wall when the tv is blaring? It’s beyond my imagination to see the world through their senses.

One night after it had snowed a lot, we were inside watching TV. Suddenly both of our cats ran to the balcony door, intent on something outside.

We couldn’t figure out what they were interested in. It was dark, no precipitation, no birds.

In the morning, we found out - we saw the footprints where a little mouse had somehow scaled several stories - we’re up high - and skittered along a very narrow, snow-covered ledge that was probably less wide than his own body. He then pitter-pattered all over our balcony.

I can’t imagine that the cats heard mouse footsteps in the snow, so the mouse must have made some little squeak sound that the cats heard, despite the noise of the TV.

It was impressive. Nothing but birds - not even squirrels, when we have the bird feeder out - ever ventures up this high. Mouse was intrepid.

Exactly. There might be radar type frequencies. It fascinates me to watch them turn their ears, sometimes half way, sometimes only one ear. They also let me know when someone is walking outside by the direction of their eyes and ears. The advantage of cats over dogs is that they’re silent when alert.

Ours scare me sometimes. they can hear people coming down the hall of our apartment building before I hear a thing.

I had a cat years ago when I lived with a family. They told me that the cat got aroused and ran to the door BEFORE my car turned into the long driveway. Didn’t do that with other cars. They not only hear things we might not notice, but they finely discriminate between similar, common noises.
