Earth is far from a solid mass of rock. The outer layer of our planet – known as the lithosphere – is made up of more than 20 tectonic plates; as these gargantuan slates glide about the face of the planet, we get the movement of continents, and interaction at the boundaries, not least of which is the rise and fall of entire mountain ranges and oceanic trenches.
Yet there's some debate over what causes these giant slabs of rock to move around in the first place.
Amongst the many hypotheses put forward over the centuries, convection currents generated by the planet's hot core have been discussed as an explanation, but it's doubtful whether this effect would produce enough energy.
A newly published study looks to the skies for an explanation. Noting that force rather than heat is most commonly used to move large objects, the authors suggest that the interplay of gravitational forces from the Sun, Moon, and Earth could be responsible for the movement of Earth's tectonic plates.
Key to the hypothesis is the barycenter – the center of mass of an orbiting system of bodies, in this case that of Earth and the Moon. This is the point around which our Moon actually orbits, and it's not directly in the center of mass of our planet, which we call the geocenter.
Instead, the location of the barycenter within Earth changes over the course of the month by as much as 600 kilometers (373 miles) because the Moon's orbit around Earth is elliptical due to our Sun's gravitational pull.

I’m a proponent of the Subterranean Rock Giants theory myself.
“Moon’s orbit around Earth “
They were technically accurate till this.
That’s no moon. It’s a space station.
Guess this means that JSW, sitting there at L2, will cause even more earthquakes?
Sort of like the "Jupiter Effect" without the planets.
There are Pop Rocks® at the center of the earth.
Why not? Makes as much sense as anything else.
Hell
There was a pair of twins called Harold and Aruld who decided to do a social experiment. Harold would act all nice, polite and friendly, whereas Aruld would act rude, outspoken and brash. They went into a few stores and conversed with some customers and staff, and afterwards a representative went in to ask who, out of the two they preferred. Strangely, Harold didn’t get a single vote.
Ginat Space Hamsters.
Pretty sure it’s White Supremacy.
The Great Good Friday Earthquake of 1964 in Alaska occurred 4 minutes after the Moon was full. During my lifetime I have been a keen observer of natural events in conjunction with the phases of the Moon. Having practiced medicine for over 45 years I know how crazy people get around the time of the Full Moon. I used to plan my ocean fishing trips around the Moon phases. I am convinced that the ocean tides and the pull of the Moon have a much greater effect on humans and natural events than is generally acknowledged. We are mostly made of salt water. The weight of the tidal flows sloshing around the surface of the planet could easily trigger fault lines that have been building up stresses. The Full Moon has the greatest gravitational effect on the Earth and the New Moon is close behind. Hmm...
Anyone have an area rug lying loose on the floor without carpet tape underneath? Notice how the rug moves around on its own? That’s the same thing that happens to the earth’s plates. It’s caused by the same thing. Mystery solved. Can I have my grant money now?
I imagine the full truth is a combination of forces, including the earth’s inner heat, it’s effects on the materials in the layers of the earth, and also the effects of gravitational pull from earth’s moon. Not a single force but the dynamic combination of different forces.
a massive meteor strike has got to cause some major crust shifting and even pole shifts. And we know there has been massive meteor strikes.
I have a theory that the outer crust moves at a different speed because of some ‘elasticity’ of molten rock at the center. This different rate is the source of our magnetic field.
And the crust swings back and forth like a screen door swings back and forth. Which could have a periodic interval of 26,000 years. Which is how long the poles seem to shift.
Mars does not seem to have an inner core that spins at a different rate- so, no magnetic field. So bye-bye atmosphere and water.
This is not some new wild theory at all. The moon’s gravitational pull has long been known to be a factor on tides, and pulling and pushing on plates.
Yes to all of that.
