MOUNT AIRY, N.C. — Betty Lynn, the film and television actor who was best known for her role as Barney Fife’s sweetheart Thelma Lou on “The Andy Griffith Show,” has died. She was 95.

Lynn died peacefully Saturday after a brief illness, The Andy Griffith Museum in Mount Airy, North Carolina, announced in a statement.

Lynn appeared as Thelma Lou on the show from 1961 until 1966. She reprised her role in the made-for-TV movie “Return to Mayberry,” in which Thelma Lou and Barney got married.

She actually lived in the real Mayberry.

Where would that be?

I mean: What is the name of the "real" Mayberry of which she was a resident?

Regards,

Crap. I was seriously considering going to Mt Airy to meet her. She was going to the museum every 2 weeks to sign autographs and chat with fans.

I’ll never get over how Ron Howard and Griffith did an ad promoting O-care. The AGS was the most wholesome, all American TV show ever recorded. It exhibited family values, patriotism, honesty, you name it.

Betty Lynn never revealed her political views to my knowledge. Neither did Don Knotts. That tells me they were likely conservatives. At least I’d like to think so.

Now, the lone survivor is liberal Ron Howard.

*COVID* will get every one of us some day. I don’t know the day it will happen, but my cause of death will be *COVID*! Even if I’m flattened by a truck.

Mt Airy, NC. I went there with my wife and 2 daughters about 10 years ago. Got my haircut at the barber shop. The barber had been there for 50 years. Worst haircut I ever had.

We were watching an episode of the old Andy Griffith Show when we were packing up to leave a hotel. It was funny and still seemed fresh, even after all these decades...

My husband asked why TV can’t be made like that now and is instead loaded down with gay and tranny issues and other “modern” perversions that are being shoved down our throats.

Yes, I know. I have an elderly friend that worked with him years ago and said he was insufferable and treated the staff horribly. What you saw on the screen was the exact opposite of how he treated people and acted in real life.

Reminds me of what the secret service said about Jimmy Cater - he was anything but the “downhome, aw shucks” type that he portrayed himself to be.

I’ve heard that too.
In fact I’ve been told that his personality better fit that of the character he played in “A Face in the Crowd” - Larry “Lonesome” Rhodes.

By the way “A Face in the Crowd” is a great film. Well worth the time to watch !

A lot of people want to preserve family values, social standards, and cherished traditions because they desire stability and order in this unpredictable world. Can’t blame anyone for wanting that IMHO. Its a lot better than the continuous chaos and dysfunction that plagues us now.

Yes, I've heard for years that he was more like Lonesome Rhodes than Matlock. He was the kind of guy who makes a great murder victim on shows like Murder, She Wrote - a "beloved TV star" who really a jerk and is despised by the people he works with.

“Andy Griffith, a bigger, vile lib you’ll never find.”

It was well known he was the very worst actor to ask for an autograph or try to talk with. He was mean as heck towards his fans.

Maybe that’s why the show bosses gave dorky Barney the far better looking girlfriend.
