Yes, I know. I have an elderly friend that worked with him years ago and said he was insufferable and treated the staff horribly. What you saw on the screen was the exact opposite of how he treated people and acted in real life.
Reminds me of what the secret service said about Jimmy Cater - he was anything but the “downhome, aw shucks” type that he portrayed himself to be.

In fact I’ve been told that his personality better fit that of the character he played in “A Face in the Crowd” - Larry “Lonesome” Rhodes.
By the way “A Face in the Crowd” is a great film. Well worth the time to watch !
