Merck’s new COVID-19 pill, known as molnupiravir, headed for FDA review for emergency authorization, could potentially carry serious safety issues stemming from the method used to kill the virus, scientists warned, according to a report.
The oral antiviral medication integrates into the genetic makeup of the virus, causing a large number of mutations to destroy the virus. However, some laboratory tests indicated the drug’s ability to cause mutations in genetic material of mammalian cells, theoretically causing cancer or birth defects, Barron’s reported.

You know what this boils down to? Logical risk analysis.
If a drug has not been in widespread use for 5-10 years you are a fool for taking it unless you are terminally it.

The worst part of that is that Trump most likely got that info on HCQ and other therapeutics from Fauci, Birx and others of their ilk that were "advising" him.
Pres. Trump didn't study medicine. At what other point in his life would he have had an interest in those things? Who else would he have asked about it in early 2020?

I wouldn’t trust any new drugs big pharma puts out at this point.
Rest assured, if Trump were still president, this drug would never see the light of day.

Here is this link that tells how they aren’t concerned with mutations in humans. There is this comment:

This program included assays such as Big Blue and PIG-a designed to provide a robust measure of a drug or chemical’s ability to induce mutations in vivo. Animals were administered molnupiravir for longer and at higher doses (mg/Kg) than those employed in human studies. The totality of the data from these studies indicates that molnupiravir is not mutagenic or genotoxic in in vivo mammalian systems.”
