Ever since we learned that this is the way the Inca’s did their big stones, I suspected that this was the case.
The problem with the rubble fill idea is, the interior of the Great Pyramid is known to be made of blocks thanks to probing, drilling, and the Robber's Hole, which was chipped up through the structure, probably since the muzzie takeover in the 7th c.
If the structure had been built closer to the Meditarranean, they'd eventually have tried seabar.
