For home defense at a very budget constrained price, what do FReepers (or their sources) think: Semi-auto or pump action 12 ga. shotgun? Semi-auto will deliver the most stopping power in a very short time, but might it be less reliable? Other considerations?
Or what they learned from joe Biden....
The pattern of standard 8shot is about 13-16 inches at 25 feet. This means a far tighter pattern at room length, say 15 feet. So, go big on the first couple shells (e.g., = or > than 6 shot) to catch the scumbag on the first/second shot, slow down, or disable, followed by buck, if needed. And ignore the possible legal issues with how you rack the shells.
Impressive. A .22 that could break your shoulder with recoil.
I’d like to hear from those who have fired a 12 gauge within a home several times in a row w/o hearing protection have to say about the experience?
I’ve watched countless vids of people who were talking about how great a shotgun is for home defense but when actually firing the shotgun, they are outside and wearing hearing protection.
In addition to what I asked in the previous post, I’d like to find out if anyone or organization did research on the impact of firing a 12 gauge shotgun in an enclosed room has on the shooter who isn’t wearing hearing protection? Is there a notable decrease in spatial awareness? Hearing? Would one’s ability to deal with other intruders be seriously degraded for any length of time?
Actually, I read an FBI report a few years ago that said a small 223 round was less likely to over-penetrate than 00 buckshot.
Firing any gun indoors without hearing protection is going to be disturbing. I have not seen any studies, but I would think that the sharper “crack” of a rifle or handgun would be more disadvantages than the lower velocity bark of a shotgun. By the way, like your screen name, bought an Armscorp .38 earlier this year.
And less accurate too. If someone you're trying to shoot is standing next to someone you're trying to protect, you don't want to fire shot. Slugs aren't as accurate and if you over-penetrate with slugs, you've got a real problem on your hands.
Great point that hasn't been brought up, shotgun blasts are around 150-160 decibels, loud enough to cause permanent hearing damage to people in the vicinity not wearing hearing protection. While rifles and handguns are loud, they're around 20-30 decibels quieter than shotguns.
This is another reason to avoid using shotguns as your main home defense weapon if you live with other people or have other people over on a regular basis.

I think the only sources on the subject would be combat veterans who were involved in urban warfare. There apparently being no studies on the matter.
I bought my RIA M200 revolver 3 years ago and I’m quite happy with it. An economical gun that does the job.
I bought the same model for my wife about 15 years ago.
The fit, finish, and lockup are excellent.
Almost all conflicts can end without shooting someone. I’m basing my comment on experience, where the conflict ended with the sound of chambering a shell. The three teenagers simply dropped down with their hands up.
Hi.
Imho a man should own three shotguns. For example...
A Mossberg 500 for up close and personal.
A Remington 870 for the fly way critters and fun.
A Franchi (pick one) for sporting clays.
5.56mm
I like that guy!
I’ve seen similar reports. It seems to come down to bullet weight and loading. Some do, some don’t.

If the safety is still engaged you can pull the trigger all you want, nothing is gonna happen. It HAS been known to happen. Weapon familiarity and training help.

I’ll need a Mossy 500 next, but supply is thin these days. Got an 870 which works well.
When I get the mossy 500, im definitely getting the opsol. Good choice, looks like you really did up your round count.
Yes. Both.
The design of the 870 hasn't changed in over 100 years because it's that damn' good. Best shotgun made, IMO and I own several different ones. Nothing beats it, IMO.
Yes, and I already have the longish barrel 870 Wingmaster. But it’s awkward indoors. But in my current situation $$ wise, I’d have to save for another 870 for a good while, vs. more quickly putting something like the inexpensive little 18.5” pump gun I saw online with a huge rebate (1/3 off basically) in hand. (Unfortunately the rebate ended the evening I saw it & B4 I could do any research, but it gave me the notion to start “hunting”. And do research like this thread.
Thanks to all for their thoughts. Lots to think about. Like stealth vs. deterrence...
