A newly released video by the American Meteor Society shows a fireball moving across the sky above North Carolina last Friday.
According to NASA Meteor Watch, the phenomenon was seen over North Carolina after 7:30 p.m., one of several fireball sightings in the U.S. that night.
An analysis from NASA said the meteor "skimmed the coast of North Carolina," noticeable to sightseers some 48 miles above the ocean in Jacksonville, N.C., blazing across the sky at 32,000 mph.
Meteoroids typically enter Earth's atmosphere at 25,000 to 160,000 mph, however, they "rapidly decelerate" as they travel through the atmosphere, according to the nonprofit American Meteor Society.
The fireball traveled 26 miles through Earth's upper atmosphere, later disintegrating 28 miles above Morehead City.
Up to 150 people across Maryland, South Carolina, Virginia and West Virginia also reported seeing a streaking fireball go across their states, AMS reports.
Friday's fireball was captured in two different videos, with one video featured by AMS having over 200,000 views.
So, what exactly is a "fireball?" Fireballs, according to experts, are considered to be "exceptionally bright" meteors that appear brighter than the planet Venus.
Don’t blink....https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=283yq227FEU
Video looks like the scene from the 1950s War of the Worlds when the Martians first arrive.
Why are weathermen called meteorologists? I never hear them give meteor predictions.
It sure does. It’s a spitting image of that scene. Great catch!
Fireball Meteor.
It sounds like a mixed drink.
Something with Barcardi Rum with both cherries and Jalapeno Peppers.
Lol..... you’re right. Maybe once a year they’ll let you know about the Leonid Meteor shower.
“Soaring?”
Soaring? No.
War of the Worlds II - This time, they’re vaxxed!
Goodness Gracious!
Great Balls of Fire!
I had her in overdrive.
How did that get past the crystal dome which keeps all the air in?
LOL
NASA continues to Drop The Ball?
Ooohhh, it’s in the dirt.....
Heaven help us all...
I’ve seen a few of them over the years here out west. I saw one over the Superstition Mountains in Mesa, AZ, a few months ago about 11:00 pm. Large and bright green, it streaked vertically across the sky for less than 3 seconds. Real purty.
Pretty cool!
Lol...I had that album a long time ago.
Funny, my whole life the concept of us being hit by an asteroid was completely possible to me, but as I got older, it seemed more and more remote to everyone else.
As a kid, you look at the moon, and you think "Well. Something certainly has run into it. Why not us?" and when you get older, you hear people say things like "You're more likely to be killed by a falling piano" and you kind of accept that too.
I think I am one of those people when it comes to being wiped out by an asteroid, think that even though the odds are ten gazillion gazillion to one, all it takes is one!
LOL, more likely, I just never grew out of looking at the moon and seeing those impact craters...:)
