“Our finding that Schwarzschild black holes have a pressure as well as a temperature is even more exciting given that it was a total surprise,”

Yes. Scientists are surprised an awful lot but still get very upset when accused of being less than godlike in their knowledge. That arrogant prick Tyson being one of the worst.

So, a black hole that is not accreting has a negative
pressure. What about one that is accreting? Can that
be measured? Would it be null or positive?

All they know is from running equations. The equations are created by people. Some equations represent reality, others don’t. You find out by experiments and/or observations.

You cannot discover something about reality through an equation, unless that equation accurately represents reality.

I barely passed algebra so what amazes me is that all these scientific assumptions are made using mathematical equations. I would love to see the chalk boards where they drew it all up........

Using the color black to describe something is racist, unless you’re talking about folks of color.

“The black hole singularity is mathematically described as a one-dimensional point of extremely high density”

All the points I’m familiar with are zero-dimensional. These ones must be really unique.

In a revelation that is likely to stun the world of astrophysics, Freerepublic poster iacovatx has discovered that black holes aren’t really holes, they are lumps. “This rewrites every physics textbook and blog”, wrote the ever-smug and somewhat annoying iacovatx.

“This means exactly what it sounds like it means – the black hole would be shrinking, not growing. That’s consistent with Hawking’s prediction, although at this point it’s impossible to determine how negative pressure relates to Hawking radiation, or even if the two phenomena are related.”

Sounds very contradictory to me. Negative pressure but emitting radiation?

Also all this is just calculations, like dark matter and dark energy that no one has ever seen or detected. More likely fudge factors to make their equations work.

In related news, Hunter Biden was named to the board of a new federal research institute created to study this phenomenon.

Hawking radiation is a very small temperature, much less than the heat from the CMBR background of about 3 degK. Pressure is linearly proportional to temperature so the negative pressure measured inside the black hole causing it to shink slightly probably corresponds to a positive pressure outside its event horizon.

Only when the rest of the Universe reaches a temperature less than the black hole will it be able to radiate the Hawking radiation allowing the black hole to completely evaporate. This should take about a trillion years so nobody should be in a rush figure out the details.

This is almost not worth commenting on...

First of all, I haven't looked at the paper yet, but the key question, in my mind, is how many σ for the result...
This so-called "pressure" is supposedly a minus 2e-46 bar. (YIKES! At my age (87.8) that must be close to my sperm count)

So the question is whether this was in the 3σ, 4σ, or 5σ range...
There have been many, many highly publicized so-called discoveries, usually in the 3σ or 4σ range that simply disappear with time and additional experiments...
The accepted value to be considered a true discovery is at 5σ...

Looking forward to reading the publication
