MISSOULA, Mont. — A Montana man seriously injured from a grizzly bear attack Thursday afternoon has passed away Saturday morning.
Carl Mock, 40, suffered a massive stroke and was unable to make a recovery in an Idaho Falls hospital, according to a GoFundMe page set up for Mock.
The grizzly bear attack occurred near Bakers Hole Campground, about 3 miles north of West Yellowstone.
A group of seven investigators, including FWP game wardens and bear specialists, as well as Forest Service personnel, revisited the site Friday to assess ongoing public safety risks and continue the investigation.
They yelled and made continuous noise as they walked toward the site to haze away any bears in the area. Before they reached the site, a bear began charging the group. Despite multiple attempts by all seven people to haze away the bear, it continued its charge. Due to this immediate safety risk, the bear was shot and died about 20 yards from the group. The bear was an older-age male grizzly.
Investigators later found a moose carcass cached within 50 yards of Thursday’s attack. This indicates the bear was defending a food source during the attack.
Recreationists, residents and people who work outdoors can be prepared for a surprise bear encounter. Activities that are deliberately quiet or fast moving, such as hunting, mountain biking or trail running, put people at greater risk for surprising a bear. When you’re outside, keep these precautions in mind:
Be aware of your surroundings and look for bear sign.
Read signs at trailheads and stay on trails. Be especially careful around creeks and in areas with dense brush.
Carry bear spray. Know how to use it and be prepared to deploy it immediately.
Travel in groups whenever possible and make casual noise, which can help alert bears to your presence.
Stay away from animal carcasses, which often attract bears.
Follow food storage orders from the applicable land management agency.
If you encounter a bear, never approach it. Back away slowly and leave the area.

The article is a little unclear when referring to the stroke he suffered, almost sounding as though that was the injury. He was mauled by the bear and suffered the stroke in the hospital.

Suspected but not proven cause of the attack.
Or maybe it indicates the bear was a glutton seeking to add to its food sources.
Riiiiiiight.
Bear spray? How about do as the park folks did, carry a gun?! If I am out where there is potential bear, you bet I will have a gun.

It was the stroke (or CV) that killed him in hospital.
We have Black Bears in Florida. They are a protected species.

A stroke? The docs probably asked if he had had the experimental Covid vaccine and he said No. He then had a stroke because they insisted and threatened him with it or they gave it to him and he subsequently died of a stroke. If true, this will be first Covid death instead attributed to a bear attack. (That’s my story and I’m sticking to it!)

Grizzly bears have been known to be much more aggressive and dangerous than black bears since they first became known to the American government, as reported by the Lewis and Clark expedition in 1805. Was this a failure of bear spray? Yes.
In a conversation with Morgan Jacobsen of Montana FWP, Morgan confirmed bear spray residue had been found on the clothing of Carl Mock. In our tabulation of pistol defenses against bears, the situation is only included if the pistol has actually been fired. The difficulties of accessing a defensive tool are similar.
If a pistol had been fired, but the bear had not been driven off, it would be counted as a pistol failure. In this case, the bear spray was sprayed, but it did not drive off the bear. Using the same criteria, the bear spray failed.
Bear spray was not used by the investigators. Jacobsen reported the bear was seen charging them from a considerable distance. It was engaged by gunfire before it came into range of bear spray.

Bear spray is salad dressing for Grizzlies. Now, if you REALLY want to repel Grizzlies, keep a wolverine for a pet.
Grizzlies have been known to back up from a wolverine.
