Researchers have recovered a treasure trove of World War I artifacts from a cave shelter in northern Italy revealed by the melting of a glacier.
During the war, the cave shelter housed 20 Austrian soldiers stationed at Mount Scorluzzo on the Alpine front, close to the famous Stelvio Pass, historian Stefano Morosini told CNN Tuesday.
While people knew the shelter existed, researchers were only able to enter it in 2017 as the surrounding glacier had melted, added Morosini, who is scientific coordinator of the heritage project at Stelvio National Park and teaches at the University of Bergamo.
Inside they found food, dishes and jackets made from animal skins, among many other items, he said.
The artifacts illustrate the "very poor daily life" of the soldiers, who had to deal with "extreme environmental conditions," said Morosini. Winter temperatures could drop to -40 degrees Celsius (-40 degrees Fahrenheit), he added.
"Soldiers had to fight against the extreme environment, fight against the snow or the avalanches, but also fight against the enemy," Morosini said.
"The artifacts are a representation, like a time machine, of... the extreme conditions of life during the First World War," he said, adding that more items appear in the area every summer as the glacier melts.

If diversity truly was strength, Austro-Hungary would have won the First World War.
As it was though, they sent their troops to battle wearing cardboard shoes.
So I guess that glacier wasn’t there 100 years ago.
ML/NJ
My thoughts exactly.
They also had to issue orders in a dozen languages.
Truly a recipe for success.
So we are finally back to the temperatures that melted the glacier foe those back in the 1910s.
Global warming melted the glacier back to 1917 levels.
Those are only constructs used to maintain White Supremacy and it's allied Judeo Christian Patriarchy./sarc😆
Yup. Same. Confusing eh?
Austria-Hungary lost the war for a number of reasons, but ethnic/linguistic diversity certainly didn’t help, especially after the massive casualties of the initial months. Pre-war, units usually had linguistic cohesion, but when they the refilled the ranks, not so much.
Then in between, the climate cooled to the point a glacier grew over the opening.
Now, with the climate warming again, we are back to 1917’s climate.
However, by modern “science”, we are led to believe that the present “global warming” is permanent and expanding. We will be frying in less than (now) 10 years if we don't act NOW
Yup. Clears things up for me

Kind of like the incredible story and timeline of “Glacier Girl” —

Kinda blows a hole in the climate change theory....
So during WWI this cave was open and it at some point closed up. Now it is open again. So in the years leading up to WWI was there global warming?
So- back during WW1 we didn’t have huge thick sheets of ice covering this area? Hmmmm, so the industrial age actually helped the earth form huge thick ice sheets? Gee- that doesn’t jive with the alarmist’s agenda-
.
