Houston Methodist made headlines at the end of March when the hospital chain’s CEO Dr. Marc Boom made the call to require all of his employees to get vaccinated against COVID-19 in order to keep their jobs. It was the first major hospital system in the country to announce it would make the COVID-19 vaccine mandatory. Even before making that move, the hospital offered $500 bonuses to any employee who demonstrated proof of vaccination.
The overwhelming majority of Houston Methodist’s workforce have complied with the policy so far: 84 percent of the hospital chain’s 26,000 employees had gotten at least one vaccine shot as of Tuesday, according to Houston Methodist’s Director of Public Relations Stefanie Asin.
But not all Houston Methodist employees are on board with being told they have to get vaccinated against the coronavirus, including Bob Nevens, the hospital chain’s Director of Corporate Risk and Insurance, and Jennifer Bridges, a Houston Methodist nurse in Baytown.
Nevens told the Houston Press he’s on track to be fired at the end of the month because he won’t get vaccinated, while Bridges said she has no plans to take a coronavirus vaccine before the hospital’s June 7 deadline for all employees to have received at least one vaccine shot lest they be fired, and is working to rally support from her coworkers and the public to get Houston Methodist to reverse course.
Asked about potential Houston Methodist patients who might be scared to come in to the hospital if they knew there was a chance their medical personnel might not have received the COVID-19 vaccine, Bridges said that she argued to her superiors that medical-grade N95 face masks and plastic face shields would be enough to protect patients from getting COVID-19 from healthcare workers.

84% complied!
125 million Americans vaccinated, herd immunity is already here. Flat earthers are still among us.
The same brainless idiots who probably ate margarine for years and now have heart disease because establishment medicine told them it was healthy.
never trust a government that opens its border and distributes thousands of disease carrying invaders across its country during a so called global pandemic...
“125 million Americans vaccinated, herd immunity is already here. Flat earthers are still among us.”
Lol. And looking forward to boosters every 6-12 months. The people who have super strong base level immunity and rarely get sick, don’t get to run their own immune systems. That base level immunity will, of course, be diminished by seasonal flu and cv19 vaccines, resulting in more illness.
The great thing is that anyone who challenges the mandate wins, because no one can mandate a vaxx which is under emergency use authorization (see US mil). They will be restored to their jobs with back pay and no vaxx. Assuming the hospital balks at restoring employment, we have plenty of great trial attorneys (incl conservative ones) here in TX, all of whom will be happy to relieve those hospitals of their money over and over again.
They can’t be fired.
Their employer should have been honest about this.
So anyone vaccine hesitant is a flat earther?
I’d let them fire me, and then claim unemployment and sue for the termination. Let the lawyers run them down.
Probably most are women of childbearing age whose concerns are justified at this time. But, the Hospital should not allow personal that have no immunity from either the vaccine or previous COVID infections around patients either.
The hospital should make accommodations and find other work for them to do until this passes.
Both articles seem to completely contradict themselves. This article essentially states that because it is a pandemic, then you can be fired. Your article states they can’t under federal law but fails to provide the law section. I am guessing BOTH are interpreting the law and unfortunately.... a long, civil suit will have to follow in order for the law to be cleared. During those years, the FDA will either approve or disapprove the vaccine but I personally think they will be pressured to approve it way sooner whether it is safe or not.
My neurologist was trying to intimidate me (his word was persuade) into getting the vaccination. Ranting and raving, I’m gonna die, on and on. I canceled last month’s appointment because I hadn’t worked out my plan. Because of today’s pharmaceutical climate, going to a neurologist or pain management requires a contract signed by patient saying they won’t seek pain relief anywhere else. Even for a surgery, the dr or anesthesiologist has to inform the contracted dr of the pain relief plan.
Mondays appointment was to be my show down. After some tense discussion, I said I needed him to sign a release for me from my pain contract. I wouldn’t be coming back, after 11 years, if he was going to require me to have the shot to receive treatment. His eyes nearly fell out of his head. “Your joking me” I said do I look or sound like I’m joking. I had a nice parting words prepared for while he was recovering, but he left the room. When he returned he said, you are prepared after 7 years (I reminded him it was 11) to leave over a shot? I said I’m not leaving over the shot, you are forcing me to choose between the two. You are making the choice. I don’t want to leave. But your tyrannical rants are too much. His response, But. I’m trying to persuade you. Cutting to the chase, I’m still his patient and there will be no more vaccination conversation.
Hallelujah. It was political theatre that he thought was coming across as caring for my well being.
Most healthcare institutions have trouble finding and keeping employees, especially experienced employees. If this ceo fires 15% of his staff the ceo and entire board should be removed. Where I live the vaccine rate is about half. Our hospital is on the bleeding edge of inability to provide services due to staffing shortages. If they demand vaccines half will just quit and the hospital will close it’s doors. Plus the employees will get unemployment due to the way things are worded relating to covid. The employees have the power here by walking away from the job. I can’t imagine that there are qualified nurses and administration lined up waiting for jobs.
I trust they make sure to be fired and not to quit. That way they can get unemployment and stick it to the democrat party taxpayers.
What an annoying website design
It’s not because of the pandemic.
It’s because of the EAU.
That said, Fedzilla still allows companies to make their refuseniks’ lives absolutely miserable.
And some are.
...EUA...
“flat earthers”???
REALLY??
We KNOW the earth is round. Trusting the government is totally different.
I’ve thought about my response to that fear tactic I’ve had drs use and decided that my response will be that I’m going to die someday anyways, that’s a given. It’s just a matter of when and how. I also figure that if they try to pull the you tactic with COVID and say I might die, I will counter with and I probably won’t.
I’m sick of people trying to coerce me into something using fear tactics.
God decides when and how I exit this life, not me and nothing can touch me until it’s my time, then nothing can stop it.
