The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.
If you have specific question about a plant/problem you are having, please remember to state the Growing Zone where you are located.
This thread is a non-political respite. No matter what, you won’t be flamed, and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.
It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table Recipes, Preserving, Good Living - there is no telling where it will go - and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us! Send a Private Message to Diana in Wisconsin if you'd like to be added to our New & Improved Ping List.
NOTE: This is a once a week Ping List. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Gardeners are welcomed any time!
Chicken & dog sitting this weekend. Trying to catch a Killer Coon (KC) who has gotten two chickens in the last week. One of them was Thursday night on “my watch”. First one I’ve lost chicken sitting. As Andrew Breitbart said “WAR”!!! KC got the sardines last night without getting caught - trap modifications have been made so we’ll try again tonight.
Raking/hauling more pine cones this morning, then on the mower (first time this year!) & got most of the place done, at least all the areas that were growing grass & getting “lush”. Some of the fields are still just growing onions, so they can wait.
Got run in by a T-storm around 5. Looks like showers tomorrow morning & on/off during the afternoon, so not sure what I’ll be able to do .... the list of things yet to get done is still pretty long. Pretty day until the storms came - Spring is bustin’ out all over - red buds, flowering fruit trees, daffodils, hyacinths ... staring to look like Easter time :-)
LOL! You’re on a roll, today!
Note to self: Hit the Liquor Store this week! ;)
A A Milne is one of my VERY favorite poets in particular, writers in general - love this! :-)
A small correction to your statement.
Fuyu persimmons (the flattish variety) can be eaten when still firm...like an apple. They are way better soft however but for someone who packs a lunch and wears a uniform to work and eats frequently in the car.....that is a benefit.
The Hachaya persimmon however must be completely soft and mushy. If you try to eat it 1 second early it is like biting into a pile.of chalk dust and you may not get your mouth open again for a few minutes.
I had to start a new asparagus bed last year myself. I feel your pain.
I peeked under the straw and saw some garlic and onions that I planted in the fall and overwintered. And they are green!!!
They made it!
NW Oregon,
Should my dahlia be breaking ground? I didn’t dig it up last fall. Put a large plastic pot over it to keep rain off and a little warmer. I’ve looked and nothing yet. Could be dead/drowned in spite of my efforts.
Thank you for the thread!
Diana! You are most welcome! :)
I received my Crimson Rhubarb Crown from Jung! Bigger and healthier than the last 2 that I received from other sources!
They died, and the leaf on this one is already starting to bulge out! (Will plant this one tomorrow next to my Victoria)
I’m told pawpaw freezes well. That might be an option.
It’s probably too soon to see any signs of life yet, but you could dig it up and see what’s going on there, then re-plant it if the tuber still looks viable; i.e. solid, not turned to mush.
I treat Dahlias as annuals up here in Zone 4/5, but once in a great while, if we have a big snow cover (insulation) before we get the really cold temps, I’ll have a survivor or two. Same has happened with Gladiolus tubers.
I’ll be potting up new Dahlia tubers soon, for transplanting in the garden, later.
Thanks for the inspiration; I’m going to go look for good articles on Dahlia growing to share. ;)
Love the banner idea for those seed packets!
Violets say the same thing to me.
I’m making my seed packet choices, today!
This link might be of interest to members here. I have learned a lot.

Sources tell me 12 months in the freezer.
Impressive! Bookmarked. Thanks. :)
