How Much is Enough? Ammo

Posted on 02/25/2021 9:48:03 AM PST by Mean Daddy

I don't want to know how much ammo you have, rather general ideas as to how much ammo think they should have on hand to feel comfortable for each type of gun? Especially with a trend towards potential anti-gun legislation.

Ex:.38 revolver and recommend 500 rounds or AR15 5.56 and 1,000 rounds.

No sweat. It wasnt a criticism. If you have 1000 rounds you are still better off than 90% of the rest.

Just remember, if you run out, me and my buds are splitting up your gear :)

500 is enough for target practice.

Gunbroker has some up for sale, and occasionally now ammoseek.com has had some. $300 for a brick (1000 primers). Used to be $30-40.

During WWII, underground fighters made their ammo in the woods. It would be a good skill to learn.

“No questions asked” turn in events - the wave of the future!

Seriously. Just after “no ask trading fairs”.

I’ll take two “lost in tragic canoe/boating accident” comments for every “greatest battle implement ever devised” quote!

Some contrary thoughts from the prepper standpoint.

- Any ammo left after you expire is a gift to the people who killed you.
- Conversely, if the adversaries expire, any ammo they haven’t expended is a gift to you.

With that in mind, ‘enough’ varies a lot depending on whether you’re talking street incident, home defense, extended service outage, or other scenario.

E.g. a WW2 liberator pistol holds one round, which is exactly how many you needed to get Jerry’s rifle.

I have a bunch of military 30-06 FMJ in bandoliers that my dad bought cheap back in the early 1960s. And it was surplus from the Korean War. I’ve fired of a few dozen of it and it never fails.

No, you need exactly two rounds, to blast into the air. Uncle Joe told me so.

Don't forget the shotgun round that Joe says to fire blindly through your door.

The American Rifleman mag used to write about incidents in the Armed Citizen column where that sort of thing did occur. It does happen.

But the best thing is still a dog.

It isn’t possible to know to ontological certainty how much is “enough” unless you’ve first established how much is “too much.”

And you can never have too much ammunition unless you’re drowning or on fire.

If you are worried about your attic caving in because of the weight then you have enough. If you have ever contemplated getting a sprinkler system for your house then you have enough.

Not directly related, but the place where I currently buy firearms has lots of handguns in 9MM and not much else. I asked the manager about it, and he told me that that is what is in the market at the moment. They have almost no ammo of any caliber.

An ammo supplier out of the northwest was taking discounted bulk orders, but buyer beware: delivery was delayed up to 12 months, and there was no guarantee of delivery! No thanks.

In these times of shortages and high prices, keep just enough. Let others be able to get some too.

At whatever point the shortages are eliminated, and prices go back down, buy cases. Ammo lasts for a long time if stored properly (in an ammo can, away from temperature extremes, and with a desiccant in the can to absorb moisture), so when prices go down again, estimate your yearly usage and get at least a 5 year supply.

This has the added benefit (to ammo suppliers) of keeping demand reasonably high for a while.
