Jane, Tell your friends these gas fireplaces usually have a battery pack for starting when no power is available.

Usually the front metal pieces at the bottom of the fireplace—usually a grille, or pivots down or can be removed. The battery pack is in the front, and the batteries may be old or dead. They are usually C or D sized batteries. There is usually a switch to “ON” on the battery pack, which will then power the gas igniter, if the remote is used.

The owner’s manual also has instructions for starting when no power is on.
