These should pass muster, and you can dress them up with ridiculous fabric covers or something.

Yes this would be another HOA antenna. The drawback is usually very narrow bandwidth without retuning. I suggested a dipole cuz they are easy to make and cheap. the loop is better from a directional standpoint. i use a 4 element Mosley WARC band Yagi on my tower at 40 feet. I can work the world on my 100 watts.

“I spent some time on the ARRL sight, but it overwhelmed me. I dont know what I dont know yet. Same thing happens when I google for HAM radio gear. I just dont know enough to know what I want to buy. So many options and add ons. Thats why I thought I’d reach out.

I am getting some recommendations from the thread. Thanks”

Mag, if you join ARRL they now have a magazine for beginners that you can choose get instead of their monthly magazine. It is very helpful. Maybe take it on like eating an elephant :-) I got my tech several years ago then was diverted learning Hebrew. Ready to go back to get general.

Vermont, I like your method. Might try that.

whiskey four romeo romeo whiskey - yea, it’s a vanity.

I did essentially the same. I used hamstudy.org.

I took the Tech and General on the same day. Then about 2 months of cramming and passed the Extra exam. That was several years ago and Hamstudy didn't charge for the test exams. Don't know about now.

No argument. You can conceal those pretty readily as well.

Ok, I looked it up and now I know what a Raspberry board is. In college I would have messed with stuff like that, though in the early 80’s it would have been primitive. At Grad school in the early 90’s I also did some computer board programming, but again, nothing like building a radio from a board. My hat is off to you. I think at this point in life I will have to find a pre-built solution. :)

...solutions to doing secure packet and voice radio HF comms over short and long ranges (like a few hundred to 1500 miles)

Depends on your intended use. Communicating with other hams you know may require a whole different setup than communicating with other hams randomly.

...I assume any modern set will be able to connect to a laptop and send packets

Anything that has an audio jack can be used with just about anything with a soundcard or audio capability.

...Does SDR allow for the same hardware to do HF plus other bands?

This question is difficult to answer without further info but generally SDR stands for software defined radio which is superior, in my opinion of course, to older technology radios. It can be used to span 'DC to daylight' frequencies but, as with everything else, capability comes with a price.

Check into APRS radio for short text messaging needs that offers global coverage and is built into some very inexpensive VHF radios. Packet communication is slow but with APRS it's not really an issue.

Thank you! Yeah, I’ve found a practice exam website that does much of what you’re describing. Teach how to recognize the RIGHT answers, looking for key phrases and exclusions.

Please add me to the list. Not going to post my call but I am one of the two 8 calls on 3838 right now. Good group of deplorables on at the moment. Not sure I’ve heard anyone discuss websdr yet.
