What are your favorite Christmas movies? Please include heartwarming family-friendly movies even if they are not specifically Christmas-oriented.
I would include a recent classic, Christmas Oranges, and favorites from better eras like The Bishop's Wife, Christmas in Connecticut, Miracle on 34th Street, A Christmas Carol, Its A Wonderful Life, Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer, Santa Claus Is Coming To Town, Frosty The Snowman, and A Charlie Brown Christmas.
What would you add to that list?
I’ll probably get strung up for this, but there’s something about “It’s A Wonderful Life” I don’t like.
What? Clarence?
A Charlie Brown Christmas. They actually quote the Bible.
Yup
That must’ve been fun to film
My favorites in order:
1. Scrooge (1951 - Sim version).
2. Its a Wonderful Life
3. Miracle on 34th Street
I like the Geraldine Page version of Capote’s Christmas Memory but not really as a Christmas film (short subject). I like the Charlie Brown Christmas (short subject).
Many other popular feature-length films...
A Christmas Story
ELF
The Santa Clause
Christmas with the Cranks
Home Alone
...are entertaining but do not approach the powerful films listed as my top three.
All the above,
Stalag 17,
All 3 Prep and Landings,
Christmas Chronicles w Kurt Russell.
Isn't there anyone out there who can tell me what Christmas is all about?
Linus Van Pelt:
Sure, Charlie Brown, I can tell you. Lights, please.
"And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the fields, keeping watch over their flocks by night.
And lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the lord shone round about them, and they were sore afraid.
And the angel said unto them, Fear not, for behold, I bring unto you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you this day is born in the City of Bethlehem, a Savior, which is Christ the Lord.
And this shall be a sign unto you; you shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes and lying in a manger.
And suddenly there was with the angel, a multitude of the heavenly host, praising God, and saying, 'Glory to God in the highest, and on Earth peace, good will toward men'".
You’re both correct! “Scrooge” was the British title but the movie was released in the USA as “A Christmas Carol”.
Everything is hunky dunky!!
Hard to find, but excellent, and we watch it every year: “The Cheaters” (1945) with Joseph Schildkraut, Billie Burke, Eugene Pallette.
Stalag 17
I was introduced to Babs when as an old lady she tried to seduce the Priest in the Thorn Birds. Disturbed me as a seven year old.
We love Jingle All the Way. We also like Home Alone, Christmas Vacation and Christmas Story.
A coupl’a johnsons, no relation
No, the relentless theme of self pity. Nauseating, really.
Sir Alec had fun with that role...
Thank you very much is my favorite from the movie...
Right now my children are again watching Laurel and Hardy in BABES IN TOYLAND. It has the Mother Goose characters and is campy, corny, funny, and has good performances and music. It is a kid Christmas movie that grown ups enjoy too.
“...relentless theme of self-pity...”
That is your take on ITS A WONDERFUL LIFE? What about the catharsis? What about one relentlessly putting others first? Oh well, one sportswriter said that the crowd in Philadelphia would boo a funeral. Any you find Jimmy Stewart’s character “nauseating” !!!
Dang,first reply. Well done.
No argument but Xmas only popped up at the end.
