Those who have joined us in recent years have been spared something on this forum that was all too common for all too long: the dreaded “opus.” Sometimes shrill, sometimes plaintive, often quite lengthy, these were vanity posts explaining why the member was leaving FR. For the life of me I could never figure out why we were treated to these narcissistic rambles.
Well, today I am 20 years on Free Republic, and this is my “no-pus,” because I’m not going anywhere. Thank you to my brothers and sisters in the fight for liberty for keeping company for two decades.
I’ve mellowed over the years and in the course of making over 3,700 replies. I still have two pet peeves, though:
I’ve realized that it is unkind to criticize the grammar of others so I don’t do it anymore. However, one exception is the despicable practice of pluralizing word’s using apostrophe’s. I can’t imagine where this violence against grammar comes from. I still see red and pounce very time I see it.
The second, based on my decades in the law, is the widespread belief that lawsuits, particularly the “class action,” are magic wands that can banish one’s foes. To the contrary they are difficult, expensive, and very time consuming. Add in the many corrupt federal judges, and entertaining the litigation fantasy is just not a productive use of one’s time. Likewise the fantasy, often expressed here, that public officials and judges can or should be jailed for their decisions. Again one’s mental energies directed on that line are just a dead end.
So that’s my airing of grievances. But mostly I want to thank all of my FRiends, and especially Jim. Here’s to another 20 years
Happy FReeperversary...
Congrats! Coming up on 20 years in May ‘21! So glad I had this forum to lean on and get info when 09/11 hit us and all years to present.
I make a huge effort to keep my grammar and orthography written/spoken correctly, but THAT was funny! lolol.
Well done.
I’m relatively new but realize we need freedom and this is a great place to post.
Thanks for your continuing consistency.
20 years today old timer...
NO thanks, don’t need to know the details of your infection.
(for those that just read headlines)
Viking kitties.
It’s a great feeling. Rush made a rare public appearance in San Jose in 2005. During the Q&A, he not only read my written question but also called out my name. Thrilled!
So do you get a zot, or a not?
Whatever.
You are vanitarous from the paleolithic age.
I don’t even know where to find my stats at FR
Congratulations
Wow!
Congrats!
This was my 20yr anniversary on FR as well. I think part of growing up has to do with accepting others’ faults. The incorrect use of apostrophes, as you mentioned, perhaps does not rise to the level warranting the internet flamethrower. Not everyone had the same education. We’re all here on FR, and the hope is that we’ll all contribute to the cause of conservatism the best we can.
Perhaps that recognition is part of having more experience with people. I’m very thankful for this site for exposing that truth.
“I hate opus’s.”
:-)
Ya gotta admit though, the reply’s to some have been rather amusing. I wonder which opus’s (opuses? opi?) have generated the most reply’s?
Welcome to Free Republic.
Ask him if he knows how to drive and if he lives with his mom.
He's a punk.
Happy anniversary. I admire the long-time members at FR.
I’m from the class of 2005 and joined after hearing George Putnam, a radio host, mention FR.
Grammar police are strict. Class action lawsuits give hope. Good news: there is no one more strict or hopeful than the Lord who delivered the American colonies from the British.
Prayer and fasting are more powerful than lawsuits.
It's good to still see new members joining. Still alot of corruption to fight.
Ha!
You’re old!
I’ve only been here for 16 years.
Yay! I’m 16, time to start learning to drive!
july 1999
and like many, was reading on the site for a period of time before that
