Officials at the archeological park in Italy said Saturday that archeologists have unearthed skeletal remains of two men attempting to escape death the eruption. Researchers found parts of the skulls and bones while excavating the ruins of what was once a large villa with views on the Mediterranean Sea, located on the outskirts of Pompeii.

The bones were found at at Civita Giuliana, the same area where archaeologists excavating a stable dug up the remains of three harnessed horses in 2017, officials said.

The first victim was determined to be a young man, between the ages of 18 and 25, who stood at a little over 5 feet tall. Unusual vertebral compressions indicated that he took part in hard manual work, leading researchers to believe he was a slave.

He wore a short tunic made of wool fibers.

The second victim was found with his head face-down, arms folded with hands on the chest, legs spread apart and knees bent.

Researchers believe the man was older than the other victim, between the ages of 30 and 40, and about 5 feet 3 inches tall. He wore much more intricate clothing.

Once archeologists carefully removed the bones, officials made casts of the two victims, who were found in a hallway in the "noble" part of the villa, in a layer of ash at least 6.5 feet deep.

I went to both. I liked Herculaneum more because there seemed to be a lot less tourists. I really got to take it all in.

Herculaneum and Pompeii, bucket list items one and two. I had hoped to go there this past May but you see how that turned out! In Oxford, England last year they had a wonderful exhibit on food in Pompeii including some of the most famous artifacts relating to food, cooking and dining. That only whetted my appetite so to speak.

I thought for sure I would open this thread up and there would be a screenshot from Spartacus with Laurence Olivier and Tony Curtis.

We visited Pompeii on a sweltering July day.It felt like a sauna bath.I'd love to spend time at both Pompeii and Herculaneum on a comfortable spring or fall day...many days,in fact.

Can’t be true. Slavery only affected Africans brought to the Americas

A couple of Christian artifacts have been found there; so the new faith was established there by 79 AD...

Yep, I have visited a number of sites of pyroclastic flows. Fortunately long after they occurred. Recently, some lookie loos visited an active volcano in New Zealand during a cruise. A few of them actually survived. Spending your honeymoon in the burn ward is not a good way to go.

More than likely a white, northern European slave.

I have been to Pompeii but not to Herculaneum. Ostia is also a neat site to visit--very easy to get to from Rome and very few tourists (at least the day I was there). Many well-preserved ancient buildings. St. Monica died there (not to imply that it is unhealthy).

A bit south of Salerno, Paestum is worth a visit--three ancient Greek Doric temples almost side by side, among the best-preserved ancient Greek temples.

They all fled downward to the sea when they should have headed for the hills where they just might have stood a chance.

I don’t see either victim “face down”. I do wish people could at least be accurate.

Toured there in ‘96. An older man lost his wife on the tour and we had to retrace our route to find her. She was still in the brothel staring at the “menu.”

Depends on how good of a head-start you’ve gotten.
I’ll bet I could give one a run for its money.

Nice picture, thanks for posting this. I’ve been offline since the big update around here, and am in the process of switching platforms, not that much fun.
