I went to both. I liked Herculaneum more because there seemed to be a lot less tourists. I really got to take it all in.

I have been to Pompeii but not to Herculaneum. Ostia is also a neat site to visit--very easy to get to from Rome and very few tourists (at least the day I was there). Many well-preserved ancient buildings. St. Monica died there (not to imply that it is unhealthy).

A bit south of Salerno, Paestum is worth a visit--three ancient Greek Doric temples almost side by side, among the best-preserved ancient Greek temples.
