It is also the 76th anniversary of the Battle of Leyte Gulf, arguably the largest naval battle in history. I did not have family on both sides for this one. The battle consisted of four main separate engagements: the Battle of the Sibuyan Sea, the Battle of Surigao Strait, the Battle off Cape Engaño and the Battle off Samar, as well as lesser actions.
At the Battle off Samar, the Japanese Center Force of 23 Japanese warships (four battleships, eight cruisers, and eleven destroyers) commanded by Admiral Kurita engaged a U.S. task unit, Taffy 3, consisting of six escort carriers, three destroyers, and four destroyer escorts of Seventh Fleet. The battleship IJN Yamato outweighed the ships of Taffy 3 combined. It was the only surface action where Yamato fired its main guns. After Leyte Gulf, the Imperial Japanese Navy effectively ceased to be a going concern.
