A team of geologists at the University of Houston College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics believes they have found the lost plate in northern Canada by using existing mantle tomography imagessimilar to a CT scan of the earth's interior. The findings, published in Geological Society of America Bulletin, could help geologists better predict volcanic hazards as well as mineral and hydrocarbon deposits.
"Volcanoes form at plate boundaries, and the more plates you have, the more volcanoes you have," said Jonny Wu, assistant professor of geology in the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences. "Volcanoes also affect climate change. So, when you are trying to model the earth and understand how climate has changed since time, you really want to know how many volcanoes there have been on earth."
Wu and Spencer Fuston, a third-year geology doctoral student, applied a technique developed by the UH Center for Tectonics and Tomography called slab unfolding to reconstruct what tectonic plates in the Pacific Ocean looked like during the early Cenozoic Era. The rigid outermost shell of Earth, or lithosphere, is broken into tectonic plates and geologists have always known there were two plates in the Pacific Ocean at that time called Kula and Farallon. But there has been discussion about a potential third plate, Resurrection, having formed a special type of volcanic belt along Alaska and Washington State.
Using 3-D mapping technology, Fuston applied the slab unfolding technique to the mantle tomography images to pull out the subducted plates before unfolding and stretching them to their original shapes.

IF it wasn’t already clear, the puppy has gone a month withOUT a seizure.
And I’m sure I’ll get over the yo-yo effect.
I forgot the w00t!
Oh, yes. It was clear. My brain isn’t functioning like it should, these last few days.
Yo-yo effects can be “fun” if they aren’t too extreme.
Thanks! (I didn’t wanna do it.)
Kitteh sez, what is dis? Morning?
Good morning, Keeper of the Kittehs!
Night before last, I read of George’s Christmas in Siberia. And a good time was had by all! And then I remember that it took place before the Revolution.
So far, so good on the new schedule. Since I chose to implement it when I was already into a tea cycle, I got a little confused about when to drink it. But then I wrote the whole down and realized that it will be OK.
I’m not sure how I feel this morning, but I’ll be taking a shower in a few minutes (so if one is missing at your house, you’ll know where it went) and may feel a lot better than I do now. As long as I feel well enough to keep the appointment at the pain clinic.
Maybe I’ll even get those things packed that I’ve been thinking about. Stranger things have happened!
Good morning. I’m feeling okay, myself. A little creaky and achy, but that will wear off as the day goes on. I have an appointment at the eye doctor this morning; I’ll leave in about an hour.
Yesterday at the stable, I saw some interesting mushrooms growing on a stump in the pasture. They looked sort of like heaps of cottage cheese, but they were the same shade of orange as Vlad’s teeth.
Somebody ought to write a song about that! Oh, wait. They did...Joe Cocker sang it!
Are mushrooms hard to grow in a house without a dank cellar?
The shower has been had, but it didn't do much for the aches, so I'm waiting...
I’m sure it depends on the species. I grew the kit Elen sent in a corner of the kitchen, and now they are growing in the garden.

This is the one I saw yesterday.
It seems to be Laetiporus cincinnatus.
Good morning. Happy Wednesday, everyone.
I do believe it’s a humph day for kitteh.
WOW! What a spectacular mushroom!
So what kind did Elen send you? And they transplanted to the garden OK? Any special requirements for that?
Happy Humph Day!
And Cinco de Mayo, as well, though I prefer Star Wars Day, if we’re taking favorites. ;o]
I could never understand why we make such a big deal about Cinco de Mayo in the U.S., unless it’s just a love for tequila.
Cinco de Mayo in the US was actually prompted by the illegal Left. Another reason to ignore it. While I believe those with South-Of-The-Border roots should be free to celebrate it every year in whatever manner they choose, I choose not to recognize the day as anything other than a number on a calendar. July 4th is something else again. ;o]
I don’t think I ever identified Elen’s mushroom. I just took the whole mycelium mass, dug a hole in the corner of the herb patch outside the kitchen, and buried it. It produced a few mushrooms during the winter, but I left them in place so they would spore.
It’s resting at the moment, but since we’ve had all this rain, I expect it to do something in the next month or so.
We might go to the park later to look at the ephemeral wetlands, but I had my eyes dilated, so it will have to wait a few hours.
Beer and margaritas. There’s no designated alcoholic beverage for Star Wars Day.
There should be a designated drink for Star Wars Day! Something that can be easily converted to virgin, for those of the non-alcoholic or underage persuasion. ;o]
I still have about 45 minutes before my appointment, so I think I’ll go to the post office and then to Dollar Tree for cards to congratulate two family members who got married in the last five months. I can’t even keep up with birthdays, and trying to keep up with weddings is getting to be a very large hassle.
Most of them are lucky to get cards!
By next year, we will have concocted an Official Beverage. Probably featuring rum.
I’ve finished organizing the lyrics for Sunday Mass and sent them to Don Fabio, the ancient Peruvian A/V guy. Now I need to make it into pages for the choir and send them pictures of the pages and some videos.
