A team of geologists at the University of Houston College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics believes they have found the lost plate in northern Canada by using existing mantle tomography imagessimilar to a CT scan of the earth's interior. The findings, published in Geological Society of America Bulletin, could help geologists better predict volcanic hazards as well as mineral and hydrocarbon deposits.
"Volcanoes form at plate boundaries, and the more plates you have, the more volcanoes you have," said Jonny Wu, assistant professor of geology in the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences. "Volcanoes also affect climate change. So, when you are trying to model the earth and understand how climate has changed since time, you really want to know how many volcanoes there have been on earth."
Wu and Spencer Fuston, a third-year geology doctoral student, applied a technique developed by the UH Center for Tectonics and Tomography called slab unfolding to reconstruct what tectonic plates in the Pacific Ocean looked like during the early Cenozoic Era. The rigid outermost shell of Earth, or lithosphere, is broken into tectonic plates and geologists have always known there were two plates in the Pacific Ocean at that time called Kula and Farallon. But there has been discussion about a potential third plate, Resurrection, having formed a special type of volcanic belt along Alaska and Washington State.
Using 3-D mapping technology, Fuston applied the slab unfolding technique to the mantle tomography images to pull out the subducted plates before unfolding and stretching them to their original shapes.

Yes, thank you! I thought of that when I first got up, and was going to use it as a greeting, but I got side-tracked, as seems standard these days.
I’ll take my constitutional at Walmart. ;o]
Good morning. Happy Tuesday.
Tuesday it is. Trash Day!
I need to go to the grocery store and pick up Shannon’s pills today, but first, I’ll plan music for Sunday.
It works just fine!! Good to see you!
Happy Star Wars Day!
Was Peter’s birthday yesterday? Or is it today?
Good Tuesday morning to you!
I hope your day goes well.
How’s the puppy doing? Getting closer to not being a puppy any more, I’m thinking. ;o]
Cute! And a happy Fourth to you!
Mother’s Day card has been mailed to DP’s stepmother.
I just put one in the mail to the Perfect Wife. It may or may not get there in time, but that’s the way it is. My FDs card will go out tomorrow. I could even wait until Thursday and she’d get it, but to AR? Even when I lived in TX it took forever!
Saturday, I’ll have to mail her birthday card. The second cup I “won” will go out to her by Friday so she gets it not too early.
Yesterday. 14. He’s already 5’ 10” and 200lbs. Maybe supplementing his food with Miracle Grow wasn’t such a good idea...
Thanks TC...
If he grows a few more inches, he’ll be able to charge down an elephant!
My shorter boys - like Bill and Pat, about 5’10” - reach their full height by about 17, but the tall ones, like Tom, are still growing at 20.
I figure mailing on Tuesday gives enough lead time to get it to Florida by Saturday.
Wow. Yeah, I got the same stuff when I was growing up, but it settled in different places. I can remember when you were posting photos of a two year-old Ana! I didn’t realize it had been that long since Peter was born.
I forgot to mail the Perfect Wife’s card yesterday, so I’ll let her know to look for it, lest she feel slighted. :o|
Ana turns 18 this fall. In fact, she’ll start college on her birthday.
If Pete is getting his height from his Mother's side, she has Uncles/Cousins that are 6' 3"+...
Oh, golly. That makes her about six months older than James. I don’t feel a day older myself, except when I try to get out of bed or something else really strenuous.
She’s officially not a puppy as her birthday is 4/15. She has gone a full month (again) with a seizure. She loves this new place.
The day? Well, yesterday started out with me receiving 2 week’s notice and being introduced to my replacement. I had been expecting this as the other half of the project is bleeding money and I’m very experienced for what I’m doing, especially now that I have it working well. But to complicate things, the replacement quit last night. So the two weeks’ notice is off the table and I feel a bit like a yo-yo.
Other than that, things are fine.
Ah. Yes. We discussed her age when I was still trying to wrap my head around it, but thanks. I’m glad she likes the new place!!
So Monday was a real Monday, but turned into a Bonus Day so the yo-yo effect can keep you caroming for a while longer, yet. Perhaps your replacement realized he was out-gunned, out-classed, and in WAY over his head!
Hang in there. Life is more fun when unexpected things happen!
