Geologists 'resurrect' missing tectonic plate
Phys.org ^ | 10/20/2020 | Sara Tubbs, University of Houston

Posted on 10/20/2020 9:33:20 PM PDT by BenLurkin

A team of geologists at the University of Houston College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics believes they have found the lost plate in northern Canada by using existing mantle tomography images—similar to a CT scan of the earth's interior. The findings, published in Geological Society of America Bulletin, could help geologists better predict volcanic hazards as well as mineral and hydrocarbon deposits.

"Volcanoes form at plate boundaries, and the more plates you have, the more volcanoes you have," said Jonny Wu, assistant professor of geology in the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences. "Volcanoes also affect climate change. So, when you are trying to model the earth and understand how climate has changed since time, you really want to know how many volcanoes there have been on earth."

Wu and Spencer Fuston, a third-year geology doctoral student, applied a technique developed by the UH Center for Tectonics and Tomography called slab unfolding to reconstruct what tectonic plates in the Pacific Ocean looked like during the early Cenozoic Era. The rigid outermost shell of Earth, or lithosphere, is broken into tectonic plates and geologists have always known there were two plates in the Pacific Ocean at that time called Kula and Farallon. But there has been discussion about a potential third plate, Resurrection, having formed a special type of volcanic belt along Alaska and Washington State.

Using 3-D mapping technology, Fuston applied the slab unfolding technique to the mantle tomography images to pull out the subducted plates before unfolding and stretching them to their original shapes.

Yes, it is morning again. But it’s colder this morning than it was yesterday. I’m dressed in layers again.

Soon (about 20+ minutes) I’ll go to the post office and then to Walgreen’s and when I get home, I hope I will be grateful for a warm (by comparison) apartment!

Maybe I can get some things sorted in the kitchen. Like cookware and small appliances. Even if only one box is packed, I still consider it progress!

When I come back, I need to bring in the water.

I’m going to Harris Teeter. Walmart has been out of the yogurt I like.

I’m back. I need to order more boxes, but the thing is, do I take my chances and order them from Walmart for pick-up? Or from U-Haul for delivery? Hmmm...

The bigger boxes will hold clothes that have already been put in plastic bags. Cheaper and easier than wardrobe boxes.

I’m back, too. HT had the yogurt.

Drama Queen says she had an allergic reaction to the Pfizer vaccine. Since I don’t know her source for this information, I believe I replied, “K.”

I really hope she feels better soon, of course.

That’s too bad about Drama Queen. With few exceptions, no one really wants anything bad to happen to a family member, so I know exactly what you mean.

I just got off the phone with my Real Brother and his wife and we spent about 30 minutes talking about stuff. I was trying to call him at the same time he was trying to call me... ;o])

He says there is a bar in Ft Collins with our family name on it, and I told him I needed a T-shirt. I don’t think that will happen, since it can’t be emailed. He did say they had snow this morning, so now I know why it’s so cold here!

He’s going to look for a photo though, of our “nanny” before folks had nannies. I think she was there to help my sickly mother, but she was a fixture for a lot of years for two generations. And no one has any photos of her. I had one but I don’t know where it is.

Three times, now, I have started to tell you that I’m going to start watching Harry Potter, so this time, the DVD is in. Today’s episode is “The Order of the Phoenix.”

I hope you enjoy it. It has some great scenes. And Gary Oldman.

The byos and I will leave for Envirothon soon. I’ve made a casserole for supper and put it in the refrigerator for whenever.

DP has taken to announcing, in the middle of the day, apropos of nothing, “I don’t know what the plan for dinner is!” Then when I ask what he wants, he says, “I was just talking to myself,” and insists that he’s not focused on what might turn up for dinner hours later, even though that’s literally what just came out of his mouth.

I think he needs a vacation!

Perhaps, if you presented DP with a grocery list and suggested he get only those things on that list, and brought them home, perhaps, just perhaps, someone might put them together in the proper order to provide “what’s for dinner.” But that’s probably bordering on sarcasm, so never mind.

I hope the Envirothon goes smoothly, in spite of what’s for dinner.

And perhaps DP could take a vacation to AZ. How nice would that be? For everyone? ;o]

We are all trying our best to warm the globe. It just turns out to be very, very big and take a lot to get even an iota warmer.

I think the correct response would be, “When you find out, please let me know.”

Totally off-topic here.

I had an Alternative Plan in case my Favorite Son couldn’t, for whatever reason, make the trip out here to help me move. Plan Bee would be for Favorite Daughter to fly out and help me with the drive.

Well, it seems she’s afraid to do that. When she moved to CO with The Guy, the transmission went out on the U-Haul truck and the brakes on the replacement truck went out. So she doesn’t want anything to do with U-Haul.

She just now told me this, so now, I have to re-work the plans. Maybe Plan Bea will be for Favorite Grandson to — noooo... Plan Bea will be that ‘Face does her own driving by herself. As long as I have loaders and unloaders, I’ll be fine.

Oh, oy. If it’s not one thing, it’s another.

If someone from your current church congregation could drive along, you’ve got money to buy him/her a ticket home.

A kitteh in sunlight!! It looks so warm where kitteh is!

Good morning.

I slept in. I thought I might try to reset my alarms for an hour later, to try and adjust to other people’s lives, but I don’t know if that will work. Although, getting up at 0300 and heading down the hall 12 hours later is still a 14-hour day, because I’ll be awake at least two or three hours beyond the time I go to bed. I go lie down because I can’t take any more pain pills and the pain is still at the point that I can’t deal with it without being crabby. So...

Anyway, I try to tell me this in preparation for my move. I will have to make some adjustments, so I may as well start before the move...

I'm sure my Favorite Son will make the trip, but I need to make sure all my bases are covered. The last thing I want is for me to get ready to load and the loaders are here but the navigator isn't. Not that I can't do it by myself. I drove from Vegas to Del Rio by myself, then back to Tucson, and will drive from here to Cabot if I have to.

It's not that big a deal. I get tired easily, so my driving day would be necessarily "short" but even at that, it can be done. I'd prefer someone to talk to, these days, but ohwell... The Lord will watch over me, no matter what. :o])
