A team of geologists at the University of Houston College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics believes they have found the lost plate in northern Canada by using existing mantle tomography imagessimilar to a CT scan of the earth's interior. The findings, published in Geological Society of America Bulletin, could help geologists better predict volcanic hazards as well as mineral and hydrocarbon deposits.
"Volcanoes form at plate boundaries, and the more plates you have, the more volcanoes you have," said Jonny Wu, assistant professor of geology in the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences. "Volcanoes also affect climate change. So, when you are trying to model the earth and understand how climate has changed since time, you really want to know how many volcanoes there have been on earth."
Wu and Spencer Fuston, a third-year geology doctoral student, applied a technique developed by the UH Center for Tectonics and Tomography called slab unfolding to reconstruct what tectonic plates in the Pacific Ocean looked like during the early Cenozoic Era. The rigid outermost shell of Earth, or lithosphere, is broken into tectonic plates and geologists have always known there were two plates in the Pacific Ocean at that time called Kula and Farallon. But there has been discussion about a potential third plate, Resurrection, having formed a special type of volcanic belt along Alaska and Washington State.
Using 3-D mapping technology, Fuston applied the slab unfolding technique to the mantle tomography images to pull out the subducted plates before unfolding and stretching them to their original shapes.

No, but I seriously considered going back into the store without getting out of the car...
The bimbo, and that’s being kind, at the electronics department of the local Walmart had never heard of such a thing.
The electronics guy at the not so local Walmart was equally mystified, but could at least carry on an intelligible conversation...
*I saw what you did...*
(Now I’m going back to bed.)
PS: Please find us a new home, even if it’s in the lobby of the AT & T store that won’t help Nully’s mum.
trashnothing?
freecycle?
NextDoor?
You’d be surprised what relics people have just hanging around ‘cuz going to the eWaste collection sites is a pain.
I have a notice on NextDoor.
I wish I could help, but I’m more useless with teknolojies even than the people whose job it is to make stuff happen. I long for the global collapse when all the electronics goes away.
That’s most likely to bet close by.
But freecycle and trashnothing are also regionally organized, so even there you might score something not too distant.
And I’d post a “Wanted” on craigslist, too, just to be thorough.
SOMEBODY out there has one; you’ve just gotta connect.
Is either TV internet capable?
You could run Netflix, Hulu, even YouTube videos just to have content running.
Thanks
I use freecycle, and actually furnished my apartment in Tucson with “finds.” Only have one left, though — gray bookcase, which will NOT be going with me! It’s a great place to give stuff you don’t know what to do with!
I’ve never heard of trashnothing, so I will check it out. Thanks!
What a pretty kitteh!!
Good morning.
I need to write to Charlie, but I can do it in a few minutes.
It’s not going to be very warm today, only in the 60’s by late afternoon, but it looks like it’s about the same all across the country to your place. Dang.
FedEx delivered the book boxes yesterday, but I would never have known, if I hadn’t been expecting them and hadn’t heard the truck. (All delivery trucks sound the same, ya know...) No knock, no doorbell, no text. Hmpf.
The boxes they came in won’t be wasted. They will hold all the paintings! I’ll sandwich them together so they can be taped shut. When the paintings come off the walls, I’ll know the move is real! :o])
Good morning. It’s a little chilly today, but we have warm clothes. I’m glad you got your boxes!
Boys have State Envirothon this afternoon.
Tom says he might work at camp this summer if he doesn’t get the environmental internship. I’m sure they’d be thrilled to have him run the dining hall.
I’m with kitteh. After all this, it had BETTER be Friday.
Happy Friday, everyone.
I put the doggie out in a light snowfall.
Did I miss something? Did we have some sort of spring backward one month?
Tom can come and run my dining hall!! LOL! I don’t eat what I should because I always cook too much and that makes me not want to cook.
Charlie’s letter has been written, the shower has been had, the bed has been made and I may go to Walmart, as they finally have boxes in. They don’t open until 0700 today, so I have a while to decide.
I have to get a prescription from Walgreen’s to get, and a small package to mail to my Favorite Daughter and The Guy. It’s a couple of badges that my niece Kara made of VGK players. I think I asked her to do them about 18 months ago and I finally got them around the first of this year. Things move slow around here...
I have to agree — the season seems to have back-tracked a month. I don’t want to go through the allergies of Easter weekend, though, so I hope not.
Snowfall?
On Friday? Looks like Friday the 13th fell on Tuesday this month.
So happy Friday!
I’m very tired of being cold.
Good morning again.
The sun is shining, but it’s not very warm.
