Geologists 'resurrect' missing tectonic plate
Phys.org ^ | 10/20/2020 | Sara Tubbs, University of Houston

Posted on 10/20/2020 9:33:20 PM PDT by BenLurkin

A team of geologists at the University of Houston College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics believes they have found the lost plate in northern Canada by using existing mantle tomography images—similar to a CT scan of the earth's interior. The findings, published in Geological Society of America Bulletin, could help geologists better predict volcanic hazards as well as mineral and hydrocarbon deposits.

"Volcanoes form at plate boundaries, and the more plates you have, the more volcanoes you have," said Jonny Wu, assistant professor of geology in the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences. "Volcanoes also affect climate change. So, when you are trying to model the earth and understand how climate has changed since time, you really want to know how many volcanoes there have been on earth."

Wu and Spencer Fuston, a third-year geology doctoral student, applied a technique developed by the UH Center for Tectonics and Tomography called slab unfolding to reconstruct what tectonic plates in the Pacific Ocean looked like during the early Cenozoic Era. The rigid outermost shell of Earth, or lithosphere, is broken into tectonic plates and geologists have always known there were two plates in the Pacific Ocean at that time called Kula and Farallon. But there has been discussion about a potential third plate, Resurrection, having formed a special type of volcanic belt along Alaska and Washington State.

Using 3-D mapping technology, Fuston applied the slab unfolding technique to the mantle tomography images to pull out the subducted plates before unfolding and stretching them to their original shapes.

Put phone in shoe, put shoe in refrigerator?

I need to wash up and get moving, too, now that DP has arisen. More driving lessons for James and Vlad. While each boy is driving, we’ll take the opposite boy to pick up his glasses.

They don’t really need them, but it will be good for them in the long run.

Golly.

I think my mother had five people in the house in glasses at any one time when we were growing up. It’s a good thing they “only” cost $25 a pop. My dad was making a whopping $2.75 an hour, feeding eight people and keeping up two households. I have no idea how it was done.

And then I think of how much I had to pay when I was working and had excellent health insurance coverage. Something I don’t think my dad ever had.

The word has gone out in the optometry profession to prescribe blue-blocker lenses for youth because they’re on screens all the time. And it’s insured.

I never knew that! Screens have changed since the first black with orange and then black with green formats.

It seems that only yesterday, I was working in the district attorney’s office, reading data off a black screen with orange print. When I was transferred up a floor and into an completely different department, we had black screens with green print. I still worked for the county, but the equipment was different.

Then we moved into a completely different phase where we had to take classes in the latest Windows programs, using Word for Windows.

Now I have to adjust my screen brightness. I don’t know how to get the blue factor out, though.

Good morning. Happy Tuesday.

The vendor hasn’t solved their problem yet (supposed to be solved by EOD pacific time yesterday) but we do have a workaround. All we have to do is set our system dates back to April 7 and we can get in.

Of course, then we have to set them right back or we won’t get any meeting notifications. But at least we can get work done.

Probably the best way to get her to internalize your schedule would be to text her a cheery “Good morning!” when you wake up.

First thing.

In the middle of her night.

Thanks!

I have considered it. But then, it goes against those things I hold dear. Like, respect for boundaries. However, I’m not saying it won’t happen. Just not today.

I did send her a message one morning at 0600 and she was obviously, vehemently angry. But then it was covered up by her admitting she hadn’t shut her phone off because...

But that was probably a year ago or more. They know I go to bed early but I don’t think they realize that I get up early. They will learn! ;o]

Vlad is off driving; James is wearing his new glasses. We’ll switch the brothers at 10:00.

Good morning to you.

I remember something similar to that, but can’t recall if it was when Igor was still in the aerospace field or if it was at my county job.

And then, of course, was the dreaded 2000...why no one thought to program the computers to go beyond that date was baffling to me, and still is. But very funny!

Good times!

Back from Walmart. The wind was blowing like crazy out there as well as on the way, but it’s as still as a mouse here.

Now, I have to get up and sort the pills for the next week. Unngh.

My Favorite Daughter just reminded me that her son, my Favorite Grandson (they all are my Favorite Grandsons, so don’t be confused!) is 34 today. I reminded HER that I’m not old enough to have a grandchild who is 34!!

I've found not having meetings greatly facilitates getting things done, m'self...

Happy birthdays!

James and Vlad have survived additional driving. They agreed it wasn’t as terrifying today as yesterday. Tomorrow is the last day of class, but I will try to get them to a parking lot to practice steering between tomorrow and the day they get their learners permits.

Errands done, and now I’m having lunch of grapes and colby-jack cheese. Yummers. Then for dessert, I’ll have some chocolate covered cherries.

According to the USPS, there should be a package delivered very soon to your door!

It looks like my next thing will be a trip to get gas for Epic Fail Lawn Service. I can’t send their Epic Driver brother because he has to leave for work in a few minutes.

FedEx us supposed to bring my book boxes today. I had a large and a medium box on my list when I went to Walmart, but all they had were small (14”X14”X12”) which is too big for me to lift when it has books in it, but which I use for other things like fragile items. But I think I have enough of them to handle the breakable stuff that I still have to pack.

I guess I’ll just have to check online, as if I’m going to place a delivery or a pick-up order, and if they are re-stocked, I’ll have to go out and get them before they get snapped up again.

So tomorrow, with luck, I’ll get more book packing done.

Oh, golly! Look at the time!!

Since my sleep was so blatantly interrupted so frequently last night, I need to go get parallel to the deck.

If you need me, text me. I’m usually mostly “aware” until around 1700, when I turn the volume down, so feel free. Otherwise, I’ll see ya in the morning.

I went to nap after the gas station, where I couldn’t pay at the pump, and when I told the employee I wanted 15 gallons, she rang up $15.

On the better side, Patrick succeeded in getting the inspection done on the Avalon, so I can pay its registration bill.

Tom phoned and said he’s had a reaction to a Covid vaccine and doesn’t think it’s safe to drive. His dad has gone to get him, having leapt at the excuse to get out of whatever worthless work meeting he was in.
