A team of geologists at the University of Houston College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics believes they have found the lost plate in northern Canada by using existing mantle tomography imagessimilar to a CT scan of the earth's interior. The findings, published in Geological Society of America Bulletin, could help geologists better predict volcanic hazards as well as mineral and hydrocarbon deposits.
"Volcanoes form at plate boundaries, and the more plates you have, the more volcanoes you have," said Jonny Wu, assistant professor of geology in the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences. "Volcanoes also affect climate change. So, when you are trying to model the earth and understand how climate has changed since time, you really want to know how many volcanoes there have been on earth."
Wu and Spencer Fuston, a third-year geology doctoral student, applied a technique developed by the UH Center for Tectonics and Tomography called slab unfolding to reconstruct what tectonic plates in the Pacific Ocean looked like during the early Cenozoic Era. The rigid outermost shell of Earth, or lithosphere, is broken into tectonic plates and geologists have always known there were two plates in the Pacific Ocean at that time called Kula and Farallon. But there has been discussion about a potential third plate, Resurrection, having formed a special type of volcanic belt along Alaska and Washington State.
Using 3-D mapping technology, Fuston applied the slab unfolding technique to the mantle tomography images to pull out the subducted plates before unfolding and stretching them to their original shapes.

W00t!
I feel as if I could use another hour’s sleep, but it’s not going to happen.
Cold here, with another 25° day. But it’s supposed to be sunny instead of rainy.
At least catballs leave warm spots when they’re no longer catballs...
True, but also lots of fur, at least my cats.
Cats always leave little furries.
Frank reports that Jake has moved upstairs to his window-side bed, where I expect he hopes, in vain, that a sunbeam will arrive.
Cats and Sunbeans. Purrfect!
How was Vlad’s birthday celebration, yesterday?
It was nice. He even won at Scrabble! Tom kept griping that he had nothing but consonants.
Also, I’m really cold again. If I didn’t have Commitments, I’d get in bed with Jake under lots of blankets!
The clock on FR is off-kilter for my time zone, and I don’t know how to correct it. I’m thinking you must have posted about about 30 minutes ago because there were no posts when I got back from church an hour ago.
It’s the only site I have that problem with. Ohwell...
Anyway, I’m glad Vlad’s birthday was a success. How old is he now? (Asking for a friend.)
I’m so sorry you’re cold! I wore leggings to church under a knit tunic, just to try and be warm. This chapel is a little farther away than the one we had been going to, but it’s also a little smaller. I was surprised to see so many people there.
Sharon came in late, but Jerry stayed home. He was evidently a little nauseous, and decided it would be safer not to go, just in case.
I felt bad for him. He’s 86 and has COPD but won’t do anything to help himself, including following the doctor’s orders, poor ol’ guy. This winter has been really hard on him.
Vlad is 15. I’m glad you were able to get to church, and it’s too bad Jerry is poorly.
I wore leggings under my skirt, and a shawl, and my coat, and my knockoff Ugg boots.
It was nice to get to church once again. I like it better than the online, because the transmission sound seems to lag behind the lip movement. Or maybe it’s vice-versa.
Anyway, it was good, and one of the speakers was a Sister Missionary from AR. She was out the door before I could get up, or I would have found out where she was from.
After I had gone to bed, I was fighting sleep when the phone rang. My Favorite Son and his wife. We talked for 30 minutes, but I was beat up for some reason, so it wasn’t long after I hung up that it was lights out!
Now, I need to go do laundry. See ya in a bit!
Look! A two headed kitteh!
Good morning.
The laundry is done. (She sez as she gives an inward groan on what is left to do...)
It’s overcast so thick I couldn’t see the moon, but the temperature is mild, for now. Milder than your neck of the woods, anyway.
Good morning. Congrats on the laundry! Jake went out, Jake came back in, saying it was cold out. I haven’t picked up the newspaper yet.
Maybe I’ll go to Walmart later today.
Ah, the rare two headed cat!
Similar, but not related to, the Crockagator, the meanest animal in the world.
Jake is probably feeling his age when it comes to the cold. There’s a lot of that going around.
I’ll go to Walmart to pick up the groceries tomorrow, but in the not too distant weeks, I’m pretty sure I’ll have them delivered. Favorite Son is a little worried about the condition of the truck, but I reassured him that I have AAA and stay within five miles of home.
I have one more application to fill out, and then I’ll have to wait for them to make the next move. Maybe I’ll get it done today. If not, tomorrow, for sure.
My Favorite Son and his wife said they bought a side of beef, and the company they bought it from this time vacuum seals the packages so it should lessen the chance of freezer burn.
Speaking of meat, I think I need to roast a chicken!
Good morning. Happy Monday!
I didn’t yodel or change my voicemail greeting. I hope nobody is coming for me.
