A team of geologists at the University of Houston College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics believes they have found the lost plate in northern Canada by using existing mantle tomography imagessimilar to a CT scan of the earth's interior. The findings, published in Geological Society of America Bulletin, could help geologists better predict volcanic hazards as well as mineral and hydrocarbon deposits.
"Volcanoes form at plate boundaries, and the more plates you have, the more volcanoes you have," said Jonny Wu, assistant professor of geology in the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences. "Volcanoes also affect climate change. So, when you are trying to model the earth and understand how climate has changed since time, you really want to know how many volcanoes there have been on earth."
Wu and Spencer Fuston, a third-year geology doctoral student, applied a technique developed by the UH Center for Tectonics and Tomography called slab unfolding to reconstruct what tectonic plates in the Pacific Ocean looked like during the early Cenozoic Era. The rigid outermost shell of Earth, or lithosphere, is broken into tectonic plates and geologists have always known there were two plates in the Pacific Ocean at that time called Kula and Farallon. But there has been discussion about a potential third plate, Resurrection, having formed a special type of volcanic belt along Alaska and Washington State.
Using 3-D mapping technology, Fuston applied the slab unfolding technique to the mantle tomography images to pull out the subducted plates before unfolding and stretching them to their original shapes.

A success all the way through. James and Vlad ate about half of it during the science team meeting via Zoom (because we have la gripa), and then they ate their full supper afterward.
Good morning.
I’m very glad the cornbread was a success! My mouth wants some, but I don’t think I even have any corn meal. Walmart was out, if I think back on the last time I wanted cornbread. Which is why I bought the mix.
Soon.
What beautiful markings on today’s floofy kitteh!
I slept in 45 minutes. I was “just going to lie here for a minute.”
I need to get a letter written to my Favorite Son, and maybe I’ll toss in a card to my Favorite Friend. I can always email my Favorite Daughter because she doesn’t like to write letters. She says it hurts her hands but she won’t get a printer. But don’t get me started! I usually write a regular letter to her then just copy it to email so she can answer it if she feels up to it. That way, I have a copy in my files, in case the servers go down.
So most of the beginning of the day will be spent writing letters. What happens the rest of the day will just have to unfold in front of me.
Good morning. You know that feeling when you’re in the bathroom with the door closed, and you clearly hear a cat spewing, and then you have to go find the deposit? Unnngh.
It’s not raining, sleeting, or snowing, so the cats went out. They probably want to come back in by now.
I slept in about 45 minutes, too. Jake had gotten under the blanket with me. I was dreaming about a card game, “Bees and Bears,” that DP got Kathleen for Christmas. It has six-sided cards with various colors and features. Between that and the earworm of “Arre, Borriquito!” it’s a wonder I didn’t wake up gibbering bonkers.
I’m going to do my prayers now, and then I’ll decide what’s next based on whether anyone else is up.
The only thing worse than being in the bathroom with the door closed, hearing a cat spew, is the same situation but with a kid outside the door, instead of a cat. Yeah. Like that.
The wind is up, which means the 29° is much colder, so I won’t be going out for a while. I’m thinking of going to Lin’s, later, for some cornmeal, but I still haven’t written any letters, so maybe they won’t get done today. Maybe they’ll get done tomorrow, after church. I still have a lesson to get caught up on for Sunday School, but I won’t worry about that, just yet.
I don’t remember what I was dreaming but it must have been OK because I didn’t wake up agitated. Which is a good thing, because if I wake up like that, it sets my teeth on edge for the rest of the day.
I’m probably too tired to do anything today, anyway. I’m glad I don’t have to walk to the bus stop, work a full day, then walk back.
We don’t have ice, except on cars and roofs, so Asuncion will be able to come over for practice and Patrick will be able to drive to work. (shudder)
Vlad is lying in front of the gas fire looking rather dead. From this, I deduce that he isn’t over the gripa yet.
I don’t like ice. We’ve had very little of it this year, so I haven’t had to use my Industrial Strength Methods of getting the ice off the windshield in order to drive anywhere in the early morning.
It’s always scary to think of kids driving solo for the first time. This is where your expertise as Driver Training Instructor pays off. Relax. He can now pay for his share of the insurance.
Sorry to hear that Vlad is still in the grip of la Gripa. Sick kids are so pathetic to watch.
The wind has definitely increased since I went to Lin’s and back. the wind chimes prove it! I found some cornmeal but not oatmeal flour, which I really wanted, but maybe I can find some on Amazon.
Meanwhile, I’ll go in and wash dishes and see if my outlook for the day improves.
LOL! And there you have it! The Tower of Babel Revisited.
How’s it goin’ Nully? In the Nully Household health (individually as well as collectively) improving?
(I hope...)
We’re back to (moon)battery, quarantine expires tomorrow, but we’re still going to lay low just in case.
That’s good to know. I’ve spent the majority of the last 25 years “in quarantine” and I think that’s one of the reasons I’ve managed to avoid most flu and cold viruses during that time. Though the last time I had the flu was in 1980, so...
One can’t take chances with very short people or those who should be honored and venerated. Give them both my best.
PS: I’ve added Splenda to my larder on a permanent basis. ;o]
Choir accomplished. Tom showed up. He and DP have gone shopping. I’m going to clean the stove.
I found some oat flour on Amazon, and was able to order it. YAY! It makes some things taste so much better! At least I know where I can get it. Now all I need is the mixer. ;o] With luck, it will be here on Wednesday. *happy dance*
The dishes are done, finally. There weren’t many, just big ones that take up a lot of room in the drainer.
I cleaned the stove and the microwave. Yes, I am all that!
Good for you!! And you ARE all that! :o])
I need to clean the microwave, but I use vinegar and water in a little plastic “witch.” So many things to get done...
I was writing to my Favorite Son this morning, and I think the mold in this place is doing a job on me, what with the house mostly closed up during the winter months. I told him how sick it was making me to stay here, and made a couple of suggestions. I’m sure that’s why I feel the way I do.
It’s affecting my thinking, too.
I hope something can be worked out so you can move sooner rather than later.
Also, Patrick drove himself to work this afternoon!
Yes, as do I. But I didn’t want to sound all whiny and slobbery. So I just made a suggestion. Or two.
