A team of geologists at the University of Houston College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics believes they have found the lost plate in northern Canada by using existing mantle tomography imagessimilar to a CT scan of the earth's interior. The findings, published in Geological Society of America Bulletin, could help geologists better predict volcanic hazards as well as mineral and hydrocarbon deposits.
"Volcanoes form at plate boundaries, and the more plates you have, the more volcanoes you have," said Jonny Wu, assistant professor of geology in the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences. "Volcanoes also affect climate change. So, when you are trying to model the earth and understand how climate has changed since time, you really want to know how many volcanoes there have been on earth."
Wu and Spencer Fuston, a third-year geology doctoral student, applied a technique developed by the UH Center for Tectonics and Tomography called slab unfolding to reconstruct what tectonic plates in the Pacific Ocean looked like during the early Cenozoic Era. The rigid outermost shell of Earth, or lithosphere, is broken into tectonic plates and geologists have always known there were two plates in the Pacific Ocean at that time called Kula and Farallon. But there has been discussion about a potential third plate, Resurrection, having formed a special type of volcanic belt along Alaska and Washington State.
Using 3-D mapping technology, Fuston applied the slab unfolding technique to the mantle tomography images to pull out the subducted plates before unfolding and stretching them to their original shapes.

Well, by the time he’s ready to go back to school, he should have gained confidence in several areas, including driving.
May you and yours have a great day too !!!
Your menu sounds great ....
Thanks! I’m trying to make enough meals to keep me going during the packing, weeding out and cleaning up that has to be done before I can move. Since I live alone, if I don’t make big batches and freeze it in individual portions, I end up tossing half of it.
And I don’t want to buy frozen foods because they have too much sodium. So I’m making dishes I like and freezing it in small baggies inside of freezer bags and I can eat what I want! Takes at most a minute in the microwave.
Better math drills than dental drills.
True.
The tuxedo kitten I found in the yard last year is a year old now, and he is a big boy! He’s a snuggle butt with me but won’t give my husband the time of day.
I’m so very glad to hear about that! Lucky kitty and lucky you!
I’m glad it’s worked out well for both of you! Maybe he would like your husband if your husband grilled meat.
Shannon killed a Bill Cardinal. #WayToCat and all, but she’s supposed to kill only the boring and very numerous finches.
My youngest began using Prodigy for math in school February of this year. It’s a game-like front end to content from Khan Academy. Kids move their characters through gateway worlds answering math questions to win battles they face.
There’s a Parent Dashboard to monitor progress, and a cool goal-setting tool; completing the selected number of questions notifies the parent to issue a Reward, and suggests setting a successive goal to spur further achievement.
That’s only scratching the surface. Player-students can interact with each other, make friends, challenge each other to battle, ...
Lots of fun mathing.
Might be interesting for Frank. I think Kathleen needs the function where all she does is type the sum and hit enter.
That’s not a monkey, that’s the latest post-botox pic of Nancy Pelosi.
There are so many to choose from.
We bought Teaching Textbooks for our crew.
Paper workbooks duplicate the material presented by the program; both the teaching and the problem sets. Even when the power was out the math went on.
Please. Don’t insult the monkey! ;o]
:o[
Maybe she liked the color. But finches, yeah.
Maybe it was an elderly or sick Bill. I told Shannon I was disappointed in her, and she rolled her eyes and called me a rude name.
Happy Friday, kitteh friends!
Kitteh service will be interrupted Saturday and Sunday because I will be on a campout. Everyone have a great weekend, and you'll see a cute kitten on Monday.
Shannon is too sassy for her own good. But maybe you’re right. Maybe it was an elderly or ill Bill.
Yes, she’s quite full of herself. Maybe I would lose weight if I tried lying in the flowerbeds half the day and killing birds and small rodents.
