A Massachusetts man died last year from eating an excessive amount of black licorice, doctors said Wednesday.

The unusual case was reported in the New England Journal of Medicine, detailing how the man consumed a bag and half of the candy every day for two weeks prior to his death.

Licorice contains glycyrrhizic acid, which could deplete potassium levels and contribute to heart rhythm problems, doctors explained.

Black licorice is for lightweights.

I eat salmiakki, or european “salty licorice”.

It’s the “everclear” of licorice.

The US made stuff is not real licorice. mostly HFCS with artificial flavoring.

You find the real stuff in European countries and online. I find my favorites at dutchsweets.com and you can also find it at World Market and on Amazon.

I was warned about this problem years ago by my father’s cardiologist so I stick to only a few pieces, once in a while.

What happened two weeks ago to make him binge?

I wonder if he quit smoking? That can put oodles of stress on the heart AND black licorice is said to help with nicotine cravings.

So--if he had included bananas in his binge, he'd still be alive?

I've always been fond of black licorice. When I was a teen I went to see a movie during which I consumed two packs of black twizzlers in combination with a tray of nachos loaded with extra jalapenos.

Not a good combination. I didn't die, but what I left in the theater restroom after the movie smelled like it did.

I love black jelly beans. And Brach’s sells bags of just black jelly beans at Easter I think. I couldn’t eat licorice like that man did though.

When I was a poor college student in the late 60s, I lived in a little house with 4 other students. None of us had any money for food or other luxuries.

The only thing in the kitchen cupboard was a case of black licorice. One of the guys worked at a drive-in movie theater and had absconded with it.

I subsisted on that black licorice for two weeks one time until I got paid from one of my student jobs so I could buy some regular food. It did a job on my digestive system.

To this day I can't bear to eat black licorice. I can't stand the smell and gag when I get it up to my mouth. The stuff is foul.

Black licorice ice cream was a real treat as a kid. It's very hard to find.
