My daughter had her bank account hacked to the tune of 2K. The bank is giving her a run around. What can we do??
Once we all get the chip implanted, this kind of stuff won’t be a problem.
First thing....has your daughter been in possesion of the card and still has it?
Tell her to write down all the ATMS and retail places that she’been to in the last 3 or 4 weeks and include their addresses. One of those places might have had a card reading device installed. Those capture the number and PIN. That will help investigatord narrow down possibilities.
Also have her do a check to locate small purchases less than $20 that are not familiar to her. Thieves do a test purchase, usually through phone or common websites. Some long while back PNC notified me of out of pattern purchase....it was a small donation to a rescue dog outfit. Not mine but one that many might overlook, thing a family member made the donation.
Thieves then check balance to see if acct is still active or has a hold on it.
$2000 is a lot to keep in a debit card account...she should look into getting a real credit card linked to her bank account.
Her bank should file a fraud investigation immediately.
My tiny Credit Union has caught all sorts of attempts on my account and fully refunded me for a couple stolen transactions.
She needs to file a fraud report and process whatever paperwork is involved in that.
It’s not that hard and her bank should walk her through that process if they are a good bank.
The time when you could use the media to get results has long since passed. The Media does not even care. Unless you get something trending on facebook or twitter then nothing matters anymore.
The $50.00 rule only applies to credit cards not debit cards. Sometimes bank will give some back but they dont have to. You must be cautious with debit cards. They are convenient but not safe as a POS card.
Many companies today - medical billing in particular - will only accept direct bank EFT withdrawals. No cards at all. To be safe, you just have to write them checks. I’m sure they hate that. :)
No disrespect intended, but I think your daughter might not be telling you the whole story. How close are you in location? Has she recently acquired a new close ‘friend’? Does she keep her pin number in her wallet?
Sorry to point this out, but sometimes hard questions need to be asked.
I hear what you are saying but thats not how banks work. They investigate and refund all money stolen. Maybe you should be on the bank with your daughter and talk to the bank.

"If you notice an unauthorized purchase on your account, report it by calling 1-800-KEY2YOU® (1-800-539-2968) and following the prompts for fraudulent activity. We will review your account with you to verify recent activity and initiate a dispute for the unauthorized transaction(s). If necessary, we may also block the card to prevent additional unauthorized transactions and have a new card issued to you."
It does not mention anything about restoring funds. My heart breaks for her but not all banks provide a restore funds guarantee.
Thanks for posting. Possible threat to your life, fortune, sacred honor BUMP!
This is why I NEVER use a debit card. Everything goes on one of my two credit cards. If I need some cash, I go to a bank branch and use their ATM.
I also check my accounts everyday for activity and balances one my smart phone using my cellular data plan or when connected to my very secure home wireless network. Have never had a problem.
And wells fargo.
If the debit card is a VISA DEBIT, then it is covered no matter what!
Yeah, I remembered after I posted.
She can stream a FB LIVE vid, from in front of the bank.
Pinging all of her friends, bank manager, local news, etc.
Thats right contact police. Been there. Done that. The bank will want to see copy of report and report #. Also someone bought a Mercedes with my credit info. Secret Service got involved.
Steps:
1. View & verify account activity.
2. Call your bank.
3. Freeze your account.
4. Change your PINs and passwords.
5. Check your credit history
6. FILE A POLICE REPORT

After filing a police report, your daughter could contact the credit bureaus and ask them to lock her credit reports, in case the thief tries to obtain credit in her name, too.
Use credit cards and pay off each month. That way it’s not your checking account that’s out the door. IMHO credit cards have better fraud protections.
