Report it to the consumer complaint offices of the FDIC and the bank’s primary regulator. Some sly questions to the bank to gather information for that purpose may help to prod them into addressing the issue properly.

Yesterday, I learned I never had an account at TD Bank, even after showing a deposit slip from last summer! I was refused another summer’s deposit. Could be “out” thousands!

As much as we all loathe and hate Lizzie Warren here, her Consumer Financial Protection Bureau has produced results on stuff like this.

Be sure you have your story straight ... and DOCUMENT EVERYTHING including phone calls. This is how I would start out.

I work in banking. I put out fires like Chickensoup is talking about. I’m a few levels up from Customer Service.

I cant tell you how many times I talk to people. I really believe they have called and spoke with our CS people several times. And when they can’t tell me who they spoke with, I tell them....

Then you wasted your time. You didn’t write their names down? Then I can’t go back to that person for info or help.

If you don’t write it down - IT DIDN’T HAPPEN!!

Is she banking at a bank that has a physical location?

Because I find going down to the bank and talking with the accounts manager gets things done much faster and with less stress on your side.

She will have to file a claim. If she has to do it by phone she should record the conversation, telling them that she is doing so. She should keep a (paper) log of when she called who she spoke to and what about as well. You really can never have too much documentation.

Not good news here, the LEGAL LIMIT of $50 applies to Credit Cards, not Debit Cards. Different banks have their own rules but that looks like your daughter is not getting that support. Restitution of some of the loss may come from her own insurance policies if she has coverage. Wish this was better news.

She does need to file a police report ASAP for the documentation. If her state has a financial fraud department or bureau, report it there as well.

I always have my debit and credit cards from my bank turned off. If I’m going to use them, I activate them while I’m standing there, let the charge go through, and turn the card off immediately.

I’m glad I did that because I got notification, several months back from my bank one day someone tried to use the card for a purchase of a guitar and related equipment to the tune of $500 which was denied because the card was off. The bank let me know. the card was cancelled and a new card issued.

FDIC covers each account for $250,000. This shouldn’t be a problem.

Actually, most are clueless. Many never even know what happened. Giving folks access to your accounts via debit cards is financial Russian Roulette.

Never, never use DEBIT cards .... you have little or no protection. Whatever they tell you, they are lying.
