Im not a big fan of accusing people of cultural appropriation. If you want to eat a taco on Cinco de Mayo, have fun. If you like orange chicken, by all means, lets do this thing. But theres a difference between casual partaking of other cultures, which is one of the awesome things about America, and trying to appropriate the lived struggles of oppressed people for political and personal gain.
Thats what makes Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez so insidious. Over and over, usually through the people of color canard, shes tried to equalize her upper crust, pampered upbringing with those who fought for civil rights for black Americans and have the battle scars to prove it. For more on why this is such an issue, be sure to check out the great Kira Davis viral op-ed entitled Kira Davis: The Term People of Color Hijacks Black Americas Hard Earned Legacy and Im Sick of It.
Apparently, AOC didnt get the memo because she found the shark and did a double back flip over it today.
Tom Elliott @tomselliott .@AOC: Latinos are black
We have to have conversations around colorism, and we have to have conversations around the African and indigenous roots from which we come and how thats reflected in systems of power.

A number of Latin American countries had high numbers of African slaves. In Brazil, especially, roughly half the population today is Black or mixed/descended from Black. Columbia and Venezuela also had large numbers of African slaves. And in the Caribbean, of course.
Latinos are not black. I remember working in a law firm when a group named BALSA- Black, Asian, Latino Student Association - was active.
They later changed their name because the Asians and Latinos bailed on the organization. I think its now called something like Black Law Students Association. It used to be BlackAmerican, but they dropped the American.
What was sad was that we only hired from this group. We had some great black candidates, but if they just came in on the basis of their grades and work, and the committee only found out that they were black at the interview, they could forget it. They had to be connected to this pressure group. These groups have done huge harm to black people..
so we are all basically mutts :)
Google LA and genocide and tell me how blacks and Latinos love each other. Latinos want nothing to do with blacks, particularly in rural areas.
Many are. See Post #42.
This is going to come as a shock to EVERY Latino I know.
What ever happened to the slaves shipped to Mexico and Argentina? They have just disappeared from history.

I’m one of the most mixed-up European ‘mutts’ you’ll ever find; and family anecdote seems to suggest that there was some Redskin blood in that old Virginia woodpile.
They [the rioters] know what they are doing and why they are doing it. Do you?
Out of all those who shed crocodile tear after crocodile tear over George Floyd who would piss in his mouth if his intestines were on fire. There is not one of those who mourned and lamented his demise who would not kill him if the opportunity presented itself.
From what I can tell, the Park Police and the MPD have blocked the ‘protestors’ from the statue. But the barbarians are trying to set up an ‘autonomous zone’ there.
Slavery is as old as mankind.
It’s in the oldest parts of the Bible.
True. I remember growing up in Northern Illinois in the 1980s
Plenty of Black vs. White riots and Black vs. Mexican riots. No White vs. Mexican riots. Amazing that...
So it was a black on black thing.Zim is now in da hood
Well if George Zimmerman could be a white Hispanic, then why not?
Where do Black Caucasians fit in? It's all very confusing....
Me too!
I was just getting used to BIPOC.
In CA, Hispanics and Latinos fall under the category of White or Caucasian.
(Hispanic references those of Spanish lineage, while Latino refers to those from the Latin Church) The black or “negras” in Central America and Mexico, tend to either be Latino, or from Carribean or African ancestry, many generations removed from the present.
Sort of like Kamala Harris whose lineage traces back to black Jamaican slave owners.
So they aren’t “Latinos”. They’re African.
Been there many times. The differences are stark and distinct.
