I apologize if I posted this in the wrong place. I'm in dire need of a new phone. I've narrowed my choices to the Galaxy S20, the OnePlus 8, or the OnePlus 8 Pro. Does anyone have experience with anyone of these? Which would you recommend? Is there something else better in the same price range?
Ditto for me. I listen to the spousal unit complain about every update on her iPhone. I never have problems.
Yes. Pay the $10 for the “Pro” app. Nothing better.
What network does it work on? It lists a lot of numbers and letters, but never says whether it is GSM or CDMA phone. Can it be used on either depending on the Sim card? Do you have to program it to use a certain network. Lot of unanswered question on the website. Also know real info or examples of the PureOs operating system. Is it Linux based? Is the user interface similar to any of the major OSs people are used to?
The first time it accessed I thought maybe I turned it on. After turning the wireless access off, the next day it was on again.
I had to dig deep but found the button that enabled the added, unwanted function.
Just a heads up for future reference.
I have a Galaxy S20. Love it! Takes great pics. Screen resolution is good. I would buy it again.
It is a GNU+Linux OS.
One review of it says
“Doesn’t actually record the other end of the call (unless volume is up high on speaker). It’s just a regular sound recorder that switches on when you make a call.”
That so or no?
May I ask why?
Oh. I bought an unlocked phone directly from Samsung.
Works on any carrier and it works pretty much worldwide.
Yes.
Even when off, it pings cell towers and triangulates position.
Furthermore, recent articles have shown that when off, it can be used to listen in on conversations, photo and video, by intelligence agencies without the owner knowing it’s happening.
Not sure if bad actors have this ability, but I’d assume so.
Mostly, I don’t want to be traced, should that ever be implemented for covid
Me too. I have a Windows 10 Nokia that is at least five year old technology. But it is still the most user friendly OS ever invented for a smart phone. Can’t believe MS dumped it. Been waiting for the new Surface phone, but have come to believe that is never happening. When it dies I may just not replace it and become a hermit. I won’t own an Apple product and the Androids like my wife’s Samsung Galaxy7 are not the least bit user friendly. She got it after her Win 8.1 phone finally died. She’s had it for three years and still hates it. But what ya going to do? Wish someone would figure out a hack to copy my Win10 OS onto a new Samsung. I do it in a heartbeat.
It might have been alright but hasn't Microsoft abandoned it?
Here's what I'm wondering... has anyone tried the Purism Librem 5? The ad at this page says this... "The Librem 5 represents the opportunity for you to take back control and protect your private information, your digital life through free and open source software, open governance, and transparency."
As I look at the Purism site, it looks like this is exactly what I'm looking for and I'd greatly appreciate any reports anyone can provide... https://puri.sm/products/librem-5/
Might want to get off the high horse, most components come from CHI-COM. We have a way to go yet.
I kind of figured that since most open source is Linux based. That’s not really an issue, but not being specific about networks and how to make the phone work is a little concerning. I have both a GSM ATT phone and a CDMA TracPhone I use in certain areas where I vacation that don’t have ATT service. I’d probably go with CDMA on a phone like this if it worked just because it seems to be everywhere and ATT really isn’t, advertising notwithstanding.
The Librem 5 is an open network phone, not locked to any particular network.
There are 2 possible modem choices:
- Option 1 is Gemaltos PLS8. Two variants are considered, PLS8-E and PLS8-US.
- Option 2 is BroadMobi BM818. Also two variants are considered, BM818-E1 and BM818-A1.
Heres the detailed list of bands supported:
Gemalto PLS8 BroadMobi BM818 Standard Frequency/Band PLS8-E PLS8-US BM818-E1 BM818-A1 GSM/GPRS/EDGE GSM 850MHz ✔ ✔ ✔ EGSM 900MHz ✔ ✔ ✔ DCS 1800MHz ✔ ✔ ✔ PCS 1900MHz ✔ ✔ ✔ HSPA+/WCDMA B1 2100MHz ✔ ✔ B2 1900MHz ✔ ✔ ✔ B3 1800MHz ✔ B4 1700MHz ✔ ✔ B5 850MHz ✔ ✔ ✔ B8 900MHz ✔ ✔ LTE-FDD B1 2100MHz ✔ ✔ B2 1900MHz ✔ ✔ ✔ B3 1800MHz ✔ ✔ ✔ B4 1700MHz ✔ ✔ B5 850MHz ✔ ✔ ✔ B7 2600MHz ✔ ✔ B8 900MHz ✔ ✔ B12 700MHz ✔ B13 700MHz ✔ B17 700MHz ✔ ✔ B20 800MHz ✔ ✔ B25 1900MHz ✔ B26 850MHz ✔ B66 1700MHz ✔ TDD-LTE B38 2600MHz ✔ B40 2300MHz ✔ B41 2500MHz ✔ ✔ Using frequencycheck.com, you can find your carrier under your country to see which bands are supported by them. However, keep in mind that not all of these bands may be available in your area.
To find out which LTE bands are available from cell towers in your area, you can look at cellmapper.net. Additionally, if you call your carrier they may tell you which LTE bands are available in your area but they also may not divulge this information.
Note that some carriers do not allow devices on their networks unless devices are approved by themselves.
Save your $$$ and pocket space and get a S10e:-)
However, ATT is not up to par with VZ for coverage in the pacific northwest nor is their customer service as good as VZ, but it all in all it is ok.
I know people (rightfully) rag on Android's security issues. I have a handful of apps I use, I've uninstalled/removed everything else from my Droid. I don't do sensitive stuff (online banking) with it and I don't buy anything from it. It's my personal email & calendar, work email & calendar, SMS and Waze traffic. I'll listen to music I put on my phone too. Pretty boring stuff but that's all I use it for and it suits me fine.
Samsung and LG no longer source phones or components from Communist Chinese after the Lotte incidents or the Samsung Note battery explosion problems when they did source components from Communist China.
My home is Communist Chinese product-free. Been for years. Buying Communist Chinese products is a whole level of traitorous behavior above buying products merely manufactured in Communist China.
