Masks help stop the spread of coronavirus – the science is simple and I’m one of 100 experts urging governors to require public mask-wearing

The evidence

The research that first convinced me was a laser light-scattering experiment. Researchers from the National Institutes of Health used lasers to illuminate and count how many droplets of saliva were flung into the air by a person talking with and without a face mask. The paper was only recently published officially, but I saw a YouTube video showing the experiment in early March. The results are shockingly obvious in the video. When the researcher used a simple cloth face cover, nearly all the droplets were blocked.

This evidence is only relevant if COVID-19 is transmitted by droplets from a person’s mouth. It is. There are many documented super-spreading cases connected with activities – like singing in enclosed spaces – that create a lot of droplets.

The light-scattering experiment cannot see “micro-droplets” that are smaller than 5 microns and could contain some viral particles. But experts don’t think that these are responsible for much COVID-19 transmission.

While just how much of a role these small particles play in transmission remains to be seen, recent research suggests that cloth masks are also effective at reducing the spread of these smaller particles. In a paper that has not yet been peer-reviewed, researchers found that micro-droplets fell out of the air within 1.5 meters of the person who was wearing a mask, versus 5 meters for those not wearing masks. When combined with social distancing, this suggests that masks can effectively reduce transmission via micro-droplets.

Another recent study showed that unfitted surgical masks were 100% effective in blocking seasonal coronavirus in droplets ejected during breathing.

If only people with symptoms infected others, then only people with symptoms would need to wear masks. But experts have shown that people without symptoms pose a risk of infecting others. In fact, four recent studies show that nearly half of patients are infected by people who do not themselves have symptoms.

This evidence seems, to me, clear and simple: COVID-19 is spread by droplets. We can see directly that a piece of cloth blocks those droplets and the virus those droplets contain. People without symptoms who don’t even know they are sick are responsible for around half of the transmission of the virus.

We should all wear masks.

More not so smart news is there’s apparently several videos about putting up a shower curtain and attaching rubber kitchen gloves to make a “grandma hug machine”. Yeah, as if they bothered to disinfect it after it was put up and everyone knows the virus can’t sneak over/under/around the sides of the shower curtain. Cute idea but far from fool proof. Grandma should stay home and skype the grandkids.

Thanks. It is very low. We are recommending initially oral 450mg TID. Many health writers and manufacturers make the same mistake by calling it a B5 derivative.

Pantethine is the disulfide bond of pantetheine. It will convert from pantethine and/or pantetheine via pantetheine hydrolase to cysteamine and pantothenic acid. Cysteamine then converts via cysteamine deoxygenase (ADO) to hypotaurine on one side of the cycle, whereas cysteine undergoes changes via two steps to hypotaurine on the other side.

Glutathione peroxidase, cysteamine and hypotaurine are the three major ROS scavengers in the human body and brain. These are the same class of proteins involved, however different expression depending on body system. This is where Protein Atlas is very useful. For instance there are different Vanins, Panks, and GPX expressions that may be majority hepatic versus endrocrine or skeletal versus smooth muscle (ex.).

Disruption of the scavengers are associated with negative outcomes from cancer, viral infection as well as neurodegenerative disorders. Many times patients suffering from both a viral infection and a nuerodegerative disorder will have further worsening of their underlying disease. I thought MedCram did a good job explaining the double edge sword of superoxide dismutase (SOD) in his lecture. The process is necessary to fight off viral infection but will worsen some conditions if the ROS scavengers are missing.

I think that is one reason many in the anti-aging community have latched on to endogenous methods of increasing these metabolites.

Pantethine is one of those metabolites discovered by Novelli in 1953. This was after Fritz Lipmann's discovery of the "Coenzyme A Pathway" and consequent Nobel prize award. Tragically Novelli's discovery has been somewhat lost to history. Since the 50s the focus has been on a single pathway. I think the work of Domini and Stipanuk in 2007 was the first to break with this perspective and show the system as a cycle and not a pathway.

Medical research is that way and I'm certain systems biology is going to sacrifice many sacred cows.

Thanks! I found the manufacturer. Now the big question for them is the metabolomics. We have been discussing this for years. I didn’t know the primary patch hurdles were overcome with the FDA.

I agree. We just found out our primary supplier is coming out with a patch. When did all of this happen? We have asked for years.

The FDA handles nutraceuticals differently than pharmaceuticals. There may have been some changes there. It would be nice to to see a RCT of metabolomics with control, oral and patch. Some interesting phone calls over the next week.

If worst comes to worst we need to find a sugar daddy to pay for the metabolic studies. I would like the patches to be effective, however can't put much weight on the product without data.

They have cornered the skin "lightening" market in the orient. Go figure. Who knows. Maybe it will improve Vitamin D metabolism too. Strictly cosmetic.

Well, that’s reassuring, and confirming that Calif did a good job locking down airports and ports. The weak link is domestic air travel.

According to a recent autopsy, a male with no known travel died in Santa Clara County on Feb 6; another Feb 17; both tested positive posthumously for CCPVirus. This means that the first ‘patient zero’ in America was not Seattle, but in California, and flying into SFO most likely.

Ruled out: On Jan 23, the female Santa Clara County non-resident ‘patient zero’ returned from Wuhan, falling ill Feb 2. On Jan 31, we had male Santa Clara County patient zero: another Wuhan traveler. This would put their travel around mid-Jan. Both voluntarily quarantined.

Ruled out: Feb 27 was the first ‘patient zero’ in Vacaville (Solano Co), later transferred to UCD Sac, with no known travel contacts. Solano Co is two counties away from Santa Clara Co.

Ruled out: March 3, was the first California death and first in the nation. He was a cruiser on the Grand Princess. His case is linked to the Seattle cases.

So it seems that Santa Clara County was the destination of California’s and the nation’s ‘patient zero,’ an asymptomatic who arrived in Dec or early Jan, resulting in the deaths on Feb 6th and 17th. Shouldn’t be too hard to track down.
