Shakespeare wrote King Lear in quarantine. What are you doing with your time?

The last thing I want, emerging on the other side of social distancing, is to feel I could have done more with my time. Plus my show has 11 seasons

My first week in self-isolation was a flurry of enterprise and initiative. I don’t mean to boast, but it’s astonishing how much I managed to get done.

My biggest achievement? I watched almost half a season of the hit Australian competitive-cooking, reality-TV show My Kitchen Rules, a dozen 60-minute episodes, devoured as ravenously as a vegemite buffet. Of course, this demanded commitment and intractable resolve, and there were more than a few evenings when, howling at the screen in agony as Manu Feildel lambasted another auspicious dish for being served without adequate sauce, I seriously considered abandoning the endeavour.

But this is an extraordinary moment, and the last thing I want, emerging on the other side of social distancing, is to feel I could have done more with my time. And My Kitchen Rules has 11 seasons.

An unexpected consequence of the coronavirus pandemic is that we have suddenly been endowed with a colossal surplus of time. More daunting than the time itself seems the continuing prospect of it — the huge expanse of unused time still to come, stretching out ahead like a collective sabbatical.

We’re now being advised that social distancing measures, such as the closure of non-essential businesses, could persist in something like their current form for as many as eight months, which means we might have to spend the rest of the year sequestered in our apartments, forbidden to leave except to pick up groceries once a fortnight. In the absence of bars and restaurants, without concerts or cinemas, deprived of parties and dates, we are facing a period of superabundant leisure. The spare time is our

You and I have identical work histories and attitudes about how we spend our “quarantine time”.

I’ve been reading (particularly the Gears of War novels), drawing, cooking, baking, and writing, along with plenty of video games. I write fiction, usually of the Fanfic kind, and have a total of around 400 pages written for one story, which is nowhere near complete. When I say, “pages”, I mean 8½x11 pages. Not book-sized pages.

I would also like to get back into turn-based typing role playing games, which are fun. It’s like DnD, but without dice (if you’re playing with the right person/people). It’s good time suck, and you have to be creative, plus have good grammar and spelling abilities.

I’ve also continued with EMT education, but on my own. I won’t be going back to classes any time soon.

My husband and I play Talisman now and again. Getting a full copy, with extensions, is expensive, because they don’t make it anymore.

Yep. That’s what I’ve been doing. I also just bathed the dog, which wasn’t fun.

My husband and I have actually been WORKING. Some of us can do our jobs via telework.

It’s been a little clumsy, since we weren’t prepared for the sudden need to do it full-time for weeks; but we’re learning from it.

One of the things we’ve noticed is that most people seem very responsible about this, and tend to feel that when they are working remotely, they have to ‘ON’ 24/7, all the time.

In this kind of situation, you have to learn that the entire world isn’t really on your own shoulders; and there’s a point where it’s time to shut down and try to maintain normal life.

I worked from home a year or so. People would call and at first I would answer. They didn’t seem to understand I was working and couldn’t shoot the breeze. Finally I started running my day like I wasn’t there until quitting time. It worked out but PO’d a few friends.

Going in to work for half a day during the week, half a day working remote; yard work in the afternoon (weeding, upgrading the irrigation system, planting fruit trees); working on next week’s Bible study; occasional forays to the nursery, grocery, or home improvement store; unpacking from our recent move; watching a Korean crime drama (”Tell Me What You Saw”— very good, BTW) with my wife; watching the birds from my kitchen window while working on the computer.

I’m not quarantined and not working from home. I’m busier than ever.

I’m helping organize a national backyard campout event on April 17. We’re inviting every family in America to camp out Friday night.

Between promo video’s, arranging registration, prizes and helping plan a livestream broadcast, Ive learned more computer skills than I ever wanted to. I even had to get up early yesterday for a radio interview with talk host Chris Stigall.

You and your family are invited to camp. Go to backyardcampout.fun
