Coronavirus in N.Y.: ‘Deluge’ of Cases Begins Hitting Hospitals
NY Times ^ | 03-20-2020 | Staff

New York State’s long-feared surge of coronavirus cases has begun, thrusting the medical system toward a crisis point.

In a startlingly quick ascent, officials reported on Friday that the state was closing in on 8,000 positive tests, about half the cases in the country. The number was 10 times higher than what was reported earlier in the week.

In the Bronx, doctors at Lincoln Medical and Mental Health Center say they have only a few remaining ventilators for patients who need them to breathe. In Brooklyn, doctors at Kings County Hospital Center say they are so low on supplies that they are reusing masks for up to a week, slathering them with hand sanitizer between shifts.

Some of the jump in New York’s cases can be traced to significantly increased testing, which the state began this week. But the escalation, and the response, could offer other states a glimpse of what might be in store if the virus continues to spread. Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo on Friday urged residents to stay indoors and ordered nonessential businesses to keep workers home.

State officials have projected that the number of coronavirus cases in New York will peak in early May. Both the governor and Mayor Bill de Blasio have used wartime metaphors and analogies to paint a grim picture of what to expect. Officials have said the state would need to double its available hospital beds to 100,000 and could be short as many as 25,000 ventilators.

As it prepares for the worst-case projections, the state is asking retired health care workers to volunteer to help. The city is considering trying to turn the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center in Manhattan into a makeshift hospital.

I think Mylan has a manufacturing facility in West Virgina, they have to bring it up to speed; I don’t know whether it was producing minimal quantities or just mothballed.

New York’s flu season is off to its worst start in a decade, and authorities are urging people to get inoculated against the rapidly spreading virus.

A whopping 74% spike in flu cases hit when friends and family gathered for the holidays, accounting for about 9,200 laboratory-confirmed cases of influenza reported to the state Department of Health for the week ending Dec. 28.

That brought the statewide total to nearly 22,800 cases for this season.

New York’s fast start comes after public-health officials this fall warned of a potentially bad flu season this year after an outbreak in Australia, which is typically a predictor of similar trouble in the U.S.

So far, there have been an estimated 6.4 million flu illnesses across the country, 55,000 hospitalizations and 2,900 deaths from flu, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said.

Most patients are infected with a strain called B/Victoria that usually doesn’t appear until the end of flu season. The virus tends to strike children and young adults more often, but anyone can be affected, according to the CDC.

The hysteria over this little cornyvirus is completely out of control.

Children should be in school and businesses should be open. Beaches should be open.

Exactly. What’s the worst that could happen? Only 672 dead just today in Italy. Sure that equates to 3000 dead in one day here but I’m pretty sure unicorns will show up tomorrow in Italy with fairy dust medicine and make all the icky deaths go away.

The frustrating thing is the article doesn’t tell you how many people need hospitalization. Only how many people have tested positive - not the same thing

Right. Most people rushing to doctors and hospitals are the same types running to hoard twenty packs of toilet paper for some reason. It’s people worked up into fear and panic thinking they MIGHT have something.

So please tell what your exact plan would have been?

Nothing that I haven't been doing for the past two months.

But there are probably still counties across America where we don’t need to test heavily yet.

We live in a hotspot, East King County Washington. We have a huge number of recent Chinese immigrants. Tens of thousands of them went home for Chinese New Year which is the equivalent of Christmas here. The vast majority made it home before the “travel ban” went into effect. Over ten thousand who didn't just flew into Vancouver BC and took the bus back to where we live. The virus has been going around this area since December.

I talked to my best friend yesterday who is a Battalion Chief on the fire department that I spent 25 years on. He said that they were exhausted from responding to calls from people who were afraid that they might have been exposed. Even here in the epicenter, the place where the virus initially was discovered in the country, there is still no justification for testing people unless they are vulnerable because of age or medical history if they have no symptoms. It is a waste of a precious resource, testing capability.

This forum has become a collection of hand wringing doomsayers. There is always a virus or a bacteria or something else that has the potential to wreak havoc on mankind. We can't shut down the country over all of them even though many may have worse potential than this one.

Media-generated FEAR is causing people to inundate hospitals. Around here, in an industrial area where a vast number of people have gold-plated insurance, they visit the hospital for the sniffles as a normal behavior. You BET they’re inundating them now.
.
.

SSSSH you’re making sense. Let the strange appearance of our own FReepers whip up fear as well in these threads.

I saw one data set that 31 out of 32 patients with a ventilator died. It seems if you need a ventilator, you are destined to die.

Let me get this straight, you believe all of this over-reaction is ok? Just want to see before I answer.

Maybe before they give someone a bed, they take a quick poll on where he stood on immigration policy and sanctuary cities. Those people might have “made their own bed,” so to speak.

What’s your plan for what we should be doing as a country? Don’t feel bad. Like many here you are not alone in bluster about how everyone else is getting it wrong but you know better. But you and the others shut up pretty quick when asked exactly what you would have done different and what you would do different to not end up like Italy.
