New York States long-feared surge of coronavirus cases has begun, thrusting the medical system toward a crisis point.
In a startlingly quick ascent, officials reported on Friday that the state was closing in on 8,000 positive tests, about half the cases in the country. The number was 10 times higher than what was reported earlier in the week.
In the Bronx, doctors at Lincoln Medical and Mental Health Center say they have only a few remaining ventilators for patients who need them to breathe. In Brooklyn, doctors at Kings County Hospital Center say they are so low on supplies that they are reusing masks for up to a week, slathering them with hand sanitizer between shifts.
Some of the jump in New Yorks cases can be traced to significantly increased testing, which the state began this week. But the escalation, and the response, could offer other states a glimpse of what might be in store if the virus continues to spread. Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo on Friday urged residents to stay indoors and ordered nonessential businesses to keep workers home.
State officials have projected that the number of coronavirus cases in New York will peak in early May. Both the governor and Mayor Bill de Blasio have used wartime metaphors and analogies to paint a grim picture of what to expect. Officials have said the state would need to double its available hospital beds to 100,000 and could be short as many as 25,000 ventilators.
As it prepares for the worst-case projections, the state is asking retired health care workers to volunteer to help. The city is considering trying to turn the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center in Manhattan into a makeshift hospital.

Yet Lennox Hill hospital in NYC reported yesterday that they have treated a 100+ in patients with Hydroxychloroquine and not one death.
Put flame throwers and machine gun nests on the bridges. I learned that from Snake Plissken .
At one per hour, Co-Vid19 looks like a piker compared to Planned Parenthood.
Good thing Planned Parenthood doesn’t give courses to diseases on how to kill people.
The frustrating thing is the article doesnt tell you how many people need hospitalization. Only how many people have tested positive - not the same thing
I’m Pissed at This Crap too.

Western Civilization?
I’m pissed.
I’m glad that have been able to expand the testing - it sucks to wonder if you have been exposed and be put on self-quarantine when you really don’t need to be. And of course, for the other 7,700 that have it - to know about it and start treatment, quarantine, etc.
It worked during "No Man's Land" in the Batman comics.
Gotham City gets hit by a virus outbreak then a 7.something earthquake strikes. The U.S. government decides it's had enough problems from Gotham so it blows up every bridge going in and out of town, cutting it off from the rest of the country.
Was a pretty good Batman story.
Excellent news! Did they happen to say what the average hospital stay was before these patients could be released and what their available bed ratio is?
“How many are illegals taking a bed”?
Where? The maternity ward?
Oh, I know what you mean. Illegals are probably mixed in.
Have you noticed S.Korea’s case mortality rate?
It was touted as only 0.8% then 0.85%, then 0.9%. Now it’s up to 1.13% and they have the most active testing program in the world.
We live in Western Washington. I was a fire officer for 25 years. I called my best friend who is a battalion chief and still working. He said that they were exhausted because of all the people who have no actual symptoms but they think that they might have had an exposure and they are sure that they have the virus. The same panic that has made it impossible to find flour, sugar, rice, toilet paper and paper towels is straining the EMS system.
The death rate cannot be known until all cases are resolved (recovered or fatal).
Something similar occurred in the final season of “Gotham.”
Yet nowhere in this article did it mention what was a surge? How many of the 8,000 positive tests actually required hospitalization, ICU and/or ventilators. With the propensity to test positive and be asymptomatic and all.

Nor does it mention how many of those who tested positive (but who were not sick enough {yet} to be admitted to the hospital) were sent home but given a script for a 6 day course of Hydroxychloroquine & accompanying azithromycin along with patient instructions.
I believe daily number of COVID-19 deaths in NYS and in the U.S. went down today.
True. But those are confirmed cases. Most likely, many had it, recovered, and were never counted.
