New York States long-feared surge of coronavirus cases has begun, thrusting the medical system toward a crisis point.
In a startlingly quick ascent, officials reported on Friday that the state was closing in on 8,000 positive tests, about half the cases in the country. The number was 10 times higher than what was reported earlier in the week.
In the Bronx, doctors at Lincoln Medical and Mental Health Center say they have only a few remaining ventilators for patients who need them to breathe. In Brooklyn, doctors at Kings County Hospital Center say they are so low on supplies that they are reusing masks for up to a week, slathering them with hand sanitizer between shifts.
Some of the jump in New Yorks cases can be traced to significantly increased testing, which the state began this week. But the escalation, and the response, could offer other states a glimpse of what might be in store if the virus continues to spread. Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo on Friday urged residents to stay indoors and ordered nonessential businesses to keep workers home.
State officials have projected that the number of coronavirus cases in New York will peak in early May. Both the governor and Mayor Bill de Blasio have used wartime metaphors and analogies to paint a grim picture of what to expect. Officials have said the state would need to double its available hospital beds to 100,000 and could be short as many as 25,000 ventilators.
As it prepares for the worst-case projections, the state is asking retired health care workers to volunteer to help. The city is considering trying to turn the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center in Manhattan into a makeshift hospital.

The worst case scenario is not the Black Death, thank God. But if it overwhelms the medical system people who might survive with adequate medical attention are going to die. We have already taken measure sufficient to prevent the death toll from running into the millions barring something really unpleasant, like a super deadly mutation. But this could easily run into the six figure range.
gee, you got all those teachers and state workers staying home with pay....non essential workers....why not ask them to “volunteer” governor?
My sister is a nurse in a Chicago suburb and is saying the same thing. No supplies. No protocols. Doctors refusing to enter patient rooms and making the nurses do everything. Management more concerned about covering their asses than supporting their staff. Shes in tears with frustration and overwork. Says shes quitting hospital work after this is over.
MSG....open it up!
Who didn’t see this coming?
Prayers for NY/NYC.
Good Lord!
It's a paper mask with a rubber band!
Thanks. It's that simple. They are either out of beds or getting close to it. They are either out of respirators or getting close to it. HCW are using their PPE for up to a week. Why discuss the number of angels on the head of pin when these facts are real? Unbelievable.
It's like Baghdad Bob debating whether the Americans are 500 yards away, 5 miles away or 25 miles away.
If it is like WA State, there would be about 110,000 tested. We are 93% negative.
No, because they tell you that you meet the criteria
Fearper- I like that name.
my daughters friend was over the past couple of days as school is out...her father is a surgeon in Westchester County Medical Center and her sister works in administration at the hospital...
the sister in the hospital said its crazy the number of people besieging the hospital because they “think” they have the wuhan virus...
i said this is no different than the hysteria of people hoarding toilet paper...all these people rushing to the hospital because they “think” they have the wuhan virus...
I think there must be some stock of this drug. However, won’t be nearly enough, for the entire country.
Extreme measures being taken, now/soon to hold off/flatten the curve....maybe this drug is being manufactured by us/allies, as we speak.
"At day6 post-inclusion, 100% of patients treated with hydroxychloroquine and azithromycin combination were virologicaly cured comparing with 57.1% in patients treated with hydroxychloroquine only, and 12.5% in the control group (p<0.001)."

Yet nowhere in this article did it mention what was a surge? How many of the 8,000 positive tests actually required hospitalization, ICU and/or ventilators. With the propensity to test positive and be asymptomatic and all.

No. These articles never say such things as facts and information.
NY is 46 deaths out of 8406 cases = 0.55%.
Okay, but it’s early yet. And NY has 0 recoveries so far.
First case in MY was March 1. So 20 days in. 0 recoveries.
I go to one hospital because they have free coffee.
I go to another for their french fries...
That’s just me...
This thing is being used and abused at both ends. I am very sick and sad for who and what we are as a society right now.
“The statistics of getting hit by a car are low so I practice soccer on highways.”
Lol.
I don’t think the statistics are low for being on the highway.
Fail.
