New York States long-feared surge of coronavirus cases has begun, thrusting the medical system toward a crisis point.
In a startlingly quick ascent, officials reported on Friday that the state was closing in on 8,000 positive tests, about half the cases in the country. The number was 10 times higher than what was reported earlier in the week.
In the Bronx, doctors at Lincoln Medical and Mental Health Center say they have only a few remaining ventilators for patients who need them to breathe. In Brooklyn, doctors at Kings County Hospital Center say they are so low on supplies that they are reusing masks for up to a week, slathering them with hand sanitizer between shifts.
Some of the jump in New Yorks cases can be traced to significantly increased testing, which the state began this week. But the escalation, and the response, could offer other states a glimpse of what might be in store if the virus continues to spread. Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo on Friday urged residents to stay indoors and ordered nonessential businesses to keep workers home.
State officials have projected that the number of coronavirus cases in New York will peak in early May. Both the governor and Mayor Bill de Blasio have used wartime metaphors and analogies to paint a grim picture of what to expect. Officials have said the state would need to double its available hospital beds to 100,000 and could be short as many as 25,000 ventilators.
As it prepares for the worst-case projections, the state is asking retired health care workers to volunteer to help. The city is considering trying to turn the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center in Manhattan into a makeshift hospital.

The NYC Board of Health is making a presumptive diagnosis of COVID-19 in anyone with fever and cough.
So nobody is catching the vanilla seasonal flu these days in NYC? Interesting. That could explain why NY has a massively larger number of cases than any other state.
Hear, hear. I'm so pissed off right now that I don't know what to do. It would be bad enough if this were something on the order of the plague, but even if it were, there are things more precious than the risk of losing one's life.
I am glad SOMEONE got it right. Truthfully, what I didn’t account for (which you did) was the acceleration being so strong in NY. I am really perplexed and since there aren’t many kits in the US i am wondering if the lack of homogeneity in the data is my downfall. Regardless, I believe in the marketplace of ideals and I’d rather fail in freedom vs succeed in a dictatorship.
Everyone who wants to be vindicated for having predicted it.
Your math is superior to mine. I just got lucky.
A wise move on her part. This worked so well for the media and Democrats that you can count on another one on down the line.
We have moved beyond that now with 20,000 confirmed cases.
A wide net, also gives you confidence that your case number isnt underestimated. Which means your case mortality rate is correct. Thats important to know, because it drives decisions such as whether to treat this like seasonal flu or to aggressively lock down cities.
Waste of time. People are now self-identifying and reporting. We treat those with symptoms, not people who are asymptomatic. We don't want to waste resources on those who are well. We know the mortality rate is overblown given the way we are measuring it. We just don't know how many people have been affected and recovered without any medical treatment.
The hospitalization rate and length of stay and ICU rates are also important as indicators of whether your healthcare system will be overwhelmed, which also drives those same decisions.
Even more reason to husband your resources to treat people with symptoms. You can't test 330 million people.
Hear, hear. I’m so pissed off right now that I don’t know what to do. It would be bad enough if this were something on the order of the plague, but even if it were, there are things more precious than the risk of losing one’s life.

So please tell what your exact plan would have been?
He is basically same job as you.
You sound like my father..
Okay, for the other thread followers, Plaquenil is hydroxychloroquine.
Last time I looked, there was a 50 per cent chance of mortality per ventilated patients. Unless what I saw was identified as an Urban Legend—seems believable.
I had severe bacterial pneumonia two years ago. I too, was never on a ventilator just oxygen from a nasal cannula.
I realize it wasn’t viral. Am I comparing apples to oranges? Not a question specifically to you but to all FReepers.
“This thing is not a hoax or left-wing conspiracy and it is not checking political affiliations before killing people. “

Will NY liberal rulers, liberal media stop using the pandemic to attack Trump?
Post of the year. Thank you.
The hysteria over this little cornyvirus is completely out of control.
Children should be in school and businesses should be open. Beaches should be open.
The hysterics are willing to destroy our economy in order to peddle their “We’re all going to die!!” hysteria.
Insanity.
Fortunately, the East Coast is primarily Dem voters.
We shall forge ahead. Be safe, DR.
bullshit. another FReeper fear monger.
